That's the reason i dont have Maxtor's in my house... They are really too hot and unreliable. Every time i have had one it died on me..

the singged one is still working fine

Your hard disk is a Maxtor 6B250S0 with firmware BANC1E00.
The average temperature for this hard disk is 38C (MIN=27C MAX=50C) and yours is 28C.
Your hard disk's S.M.A.R.T. attributes are now being analyzed and a full report about the reliability, health and status of your hard disk is generated:
Your hard disk is not below any attribute threshold. This is good.
Your hard disk was never below any attribute threshold. This is good.
The overall fitness for this drive is 94%.
The overall performance for this drive is 94%.

although i am cooling it to the max now...

Focus, please! It's digital so take it again!

Looks bad though, only drive I've set on fire was from shorting it. Give Maxtor a bell and tell them about it imo.

PLUS, I know the stacker module can take 4 drives but I don't think its a good idea to put that much heat in there tbh, I've got 3 in mine but I am looking for a nexus drive away for my raptor.

Wow, that's pretty bad. Good thing it didn't cause a serious fire.

:S i use maxtors in every pc i've owned. still got a 40MB one in a 386 machine and a 500MBG one in a 486 machine going strong, never had a problem.

something tells me it's more likely to be your manhandling of your components than the manufacturer at fault, here...

installing stuff in a running machine? never really a good idea. sorry but seriously, you brought this on yourself.

There's no rubber tyres in that picture.

I've seen this happen loads of times, normally the data is recoverable by switching the PCB

Was it by any chance a Diamondmax 10 200gb SATA1? Those have quite a few problems. That EXACT IC went pop on my DiMax 10 200. I called Maxtor, and their customer support (real people) set me up with the rma details, and a week later I had a Diamondmax 11 300gb in my hands.

It is not a power supply or heat factor. It is bad QC on that IC. My maxtor drives run cooler than comparable Seagates that I have, while being quieter and faster.

Haha that's pretty serious ****.. My first, last and only Maxtor also let out some nasty smoke, but didn't catch fire. One chip was cracked in closer inspection.
