That LCD display looks awesome! That's one of those things that, if you put them into production, could make you a lot of cash.
Remember I'm a n00b!(Just stating this so no one bashes me to bad) I wasn't aware that LCDC is made for Matrix Orbital only. N00b question : what do you mean by interfacing? by the way, i'm going to probably build a housing for this and put it on my desk. One more question....the lcds here look different than other lcds ive seen (like matrix orbital). It does have a pcb or whatever all that stuff i need, doesn't it?
You should probibly start a new thread in electronics, and let Bursar have his thread back (not n00b bashing, just a suggestion). Interfacing, like as in getting the touch screen to do something. The LCD comes with the touchpad physicaly attached to the screen, but that is it. The touchpad has 4 wires that come out, and attach to nothing. The reason the LCD is so cheap, is the touch screen doesn't do anything (nothing) without you building an interface circuit to connect to something. Also, the software provided (last time I looked) was strictly for demonstration, and didn't have many features. Also, what you are looking at is a graphical LCD, diffrent from charicter LCDs in the fact that it is not limited to displaying letters and numbers, it can also display pictures (with a limited ability). That LCD also connects through the parallel (LPT) port on your computer, not the serial or USB like the Matrix Orbital. It also has no GPO or keypad connections. It does have a controller chip on it, but nothing for the touchpad. Please do some reading, you will learn alot (again, not n00b bashing )
Don't worry about the minor thread hijack Actually I'm planning on getting an XDA shortly (combined PDA/phone) and I'm hoping with a bit of fiddling I can use the IR stuff on the XDA to control things on my PC. I haven't got much experience with IR, and I gather it's fairly short range, so it might be a waste of time
Actually, you can. Screen overlay sizes and types: http://www.cybertouchusa.com/STDdigiD.html Screen Controller, USB no less: http://www.cybertouchusa.com/VS20UA.html One source for small LCD modules: http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?&DID=7&WebPage_ID=41 I've halfway been researching this for a mod to a 5" LCD I have in my Case. My concern is if it is used like a mouse, then on a dual display setup, prolly have issues. Just haven't gotten around to talking to the mfr to find out. Be neat to be able to run WinAmp or DVD controls with it though. Later, Mav
This thing Mav linked to is what I need, right? If so, my only remainig problem is the damn software! lol
That controller operates the overlay. The overlay is pressure sensative and maps out the screen coordinates of your finger presses on the overlay. You use the LCD to display something like Winamp and press the play button. The overlay is between your finger and the LCD panel. The controller then senses where you pressed the overlay and sends the info to the PC. Browse the site and you will find the driver for the controller for download. Later, Mav
Hi all First: U can perfectly puit a touch screen onto a old LCD ... but the big problem, is always the software and controller... U can find lots of lcd's for less then nothing..but without the proper controller, its worth nothing. And even if you have the proper controller, ur gonna need some software for it.. exept if it then has a s-video/video/vga input; that will make it pretty easy For the touch screen: U will also need a controller.. Something to make the touch signal's that come out the 4 wire's, into a mouse signal (PS2 or perhaps USB) BUT, I think the 4 wire's , are 2 wire's for X-as, and 2 wire's for Y-as ; So, u could find a schematic, and put some voltage on it , and then measure how much comes out , like when u put ur finger on the right part.. or on the left part .. or top or bottom... etc... So MAYBE if it works with resistive going up and down as u touch it , then u will probebly beable to use ur gameport to connect it So.. I think its 'duh' to say that this is very hard, and very little people have been able to pull this off, for a reasonable amount of cash... becuase u will probebly buy several hundred of $ or £ for the controller !! So.. If you want an LCD If you want the GPO outputs and inputs etc... then I think ur best way is to go with a Matrix Orbital... u will have no problems with software... its all 'plug and plan' (more or less), + there is ALOT of help online for these LCD's... If you don't have a need for input/output and other stuff like that.. and u just want a nice color LCD... then get a LCD that has a S-video/video input... then u can just connect that to the video out of ur computer (i'll need to have one ofcours) (PS one screen's are pretty good at this job) If you want a TOUCH Color screen... well , then u want the same as me... I thought the easiest way for this was to take my old PDA (Compaq Aero 2130), and hook it up to the computer.... well as I posted already , its not really easy.... but It is possible, if ur very very good It all very very hard, and expensive... I think the first or second option is very handy. Maybe zapwizard know how easy it is to wire up such a touch screen... (the 4 wire's) Good Luck ! L
Thanks a lot. I'll probably just go buy one from Matrix Orbital. Or maybe buy a broken pda with working lcd off ebay like zap did
damnthats sweet. iv been looking for a program for my palm m515 to have it act as a touch screen LCD when it is in its cradel. anybody know of anything like that? opr am i going to have to write it. but again thats a damn cool unit youv built there? when i first loked at it i thought the button section was a LCD touch screen.
yeah im not having much luck with it either but my guess would be tha i dont have a serial cable for the palm. there wouldnt happen to be a version of it that works with the USB cradel it comes with would there?
Don't think that version PalmOrb will work with USB, it does work fine with my IIIc over serial though! Cheers, Nick R
yes it does specificaly mention the use of the serial cable. maybe ill play around with the source and see if i can get it to work with the USB cable. but i dont think that will happen for a while. sorry for thread jacking
