It "Should" work, but to be honest i would just mod some form of (variable) resistor into the wiring or even have it on an alternating power source, possibly make something up with a molex plug?, just an idea but if i where you i would leave it running at 12v, my dads laptop overheated even with a designated cooler :(

then yes, it should work. there is of course the question if you remove the fan cage (and exposing the weak fanblades to the unforgiving world around you, giving it the opportunity to grab your (if it's long) hear and break in your suitcase.

or leaving the cage on, forcing the holder to carry much more weight and looking not as cool?

you'll need some kind of thick iron/copper wire, stiff enough to hold up your fan. or that's the way i should do it..

There are several websites out there that sell 'unmodded' USB powered personal fans, made to be powered off a laptop. might just be easier/safer/smarter to buy one of those.

For example, a quick single point search found this Thermaltake Mobile Fan II External USB Cooling Fan

    at

    http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Mobile-Fan-External-Cooling/dp/B00080G0BK

for $20 us, but i know that there are cheaper versions out there. Just an Idea

I've made many case fans into USB fans, but never with 2 leads

They don't push a lot of air but enough to keep my external HDDs cool during long file transfers

Yep, that's the problem with running them at 5volts they don't really push anything that's why i was thinking of 10.
