I just thought this was a funny idea so I did it on my site.

You get nag screens for not using open source software!

    http://www.woventhorns.com
    and
    http://oscampus.woventhorns.com

When viewing in IE, you get google ads at my home page, and a big firefox banner at the oscampus page.

If you are using anything else, like safari or opera, it doesn't nag you... I'm just targeting MSIE atm.

Fun idea! I'm an Opera user myself - notice the sig - but appreciate FF for luring IE users away from Internet Exploder!

FF looks enough like IE not to scare noobs; Opera is, IMHO, better but admittedly different enough to be scary looking...

Browser detection for the right reasons - how rare is that? :)

My Open Source fanaticism forces me over to firefox, but I used to use opera, which is why I single out ie, and not anyone not useing firefox :p

OneSeventeen, good idea, but since Opera has "Identify as MSIE" on by default, you should also test on the substring "Opera" in the User Agent String. Opera adds "Opera" to the default user agents strings. So, this means that if "Identify as MSIE" is on, the MSIE User Agent gets returned, together with "Opera" at the end. So you should add an extra rule, if the string includes "Opera", than it's Opera as well, and not just look for the MSIE bits.

Hope that wasn't all gibberish ;)

What I want to know, is does this work simply by looking at the ID and giveing you the ad. if it see IE, or is it a flaw that will show up in IE but not firefox?
