I'm not so sure. AMD Athlons all have ECC in their memory controller, so with Athlons it's really just a question if the manufacturer can be a.... to put that option into the BIOS (many except ASUS can't be). Also, the reason for all these new sockets to have a huge amount of pins is of course that the memory controller is now on-die. From what I can read the difference in the amount of pins between "consumer" and "enthusiast/workstation" sockets for Nehalem-class processors is quite huge. Coupled with the fact that Intel is notorious for only having ECC in its high-end chipsets I have that sinking feeling that when the time comes I need to get a workstation-class version of Nehalem (or Sandy Bridge). Ah well, I still haven't built my new Core2 Duo rig, although I have had the majority of components lying about for months now...
I might be buying one at launch, but only if the price isn't too ridiculous. Most likely I'll be waiting a few months for the first price drop. Still, more likely to buy this one at launch since it's more substantive change-wise so I feel like the money's a bit more worth it. Then again, more change means more potential problems that could be present in the first generation...
i think i'm going to go for montevina instead of nehalem. the new thinkpads are looking really tasty, and i can't afford that and a new desktop. might upgrade to a q6600 though, or a even a 9450 if the price drops a bunch when nehalem comes out.
Remember that Nehalem is also sporting a new interconnect tech, QPI. This drives up the pin count too. And remember that QPI is no longer a FSB like GTL+ is for current C2D chips, the infrastructure is a bit beefier. Concerning memory, I thought this was the high end chipset as it is used in DP server boards (Bindi's liks show some DP boards) as well as some UP boards. My understanding is the UP boards are workstation class, so ECC would make sense here. I don't think there are any technical restrictions.
1. I am 2. AMD Athlon 2500+ Mobile @ 2 GHz, 1 Gig of RAM, 6600 GT AGP card, Abit NF7-S 3. My PC is getting to be too slow for all the new software I am running on it, and I want to play some of the better/newer games. Been waiting almost two years to upgrade, and now that I have the money for it and some time I will wait just a little longer for the Nehalems...
I have a number of questions: 1. Who's upgrading at launch 2. What are your current rig's spec's 3. What's your primary motivation...other than 0wnage! (like you need any other reason) 1. Me 2. Which one? 3. None
