hack(saw)ing Glad to hear it - bt then even 'quality hacksaws' require new blades after a bit of work with metal (although in my limited experience, this has only transpired after trying to cut through stainless steel mesh). Files, however, i have to admit are pretty hardcore Though I still find, even with the most precision engineered files (nearest nanometer) that my file lines tend to be accurate to the nearest non-nano-metre (ie metre). Oh and thanks oldnewby for the advice on file-usage - next time I'm doing some filing I'll look back here for the file bible
I'm not saying anything bad about either. I just want to point out that if you are 18 years old, your in college, and your workspace consists of a dormitory balcony, 1 power outlet, and a living space the size of 8x8: your space is extremely limited so workbench is out of the question and so is a tool cabinet. So long live the dremel for college students and people on a budget! That is my preach. Now, back on topic. Oh, and if you buy the reinforced cut off disks they last a lot longer. I bought a small package of an assortment of cut off discs for 15$ USD at Home Depot. It costs 21$ USD for a 20 pack of those shitty thin ones.
The beauty of oldnewby's worklogs, aside from the computer art, is that he shows us with patience and skill, simple hand tools can be just as effective as more expensive options. That doesn't stop him from using power tools when warranted. In my opinion all the tools we use have there place. From Dremmels to files, CNCs to simple clamps. My personal favorite though is the drill press. Just saying.
Thanks for the comments everyone. There is a tiny bit of room to move the switches around, and the small reset switch can easily be brought closer to the curve so both switches follow the curve likewise. This was merely a trial and was banged together quite quickly. It probably won't happen. The two top screws were what threw me instantly the switches were in place. Another reason not to use this solution. I'm sorry but I've made a quick edit to post #16. All the gear I've shown there are prizes from the MOTY contest. Almost all the hardware in this project is courtesy of bit-tech and the manufacturers. Thanks mate, good to see you back. The four hours sleep was just what happened that particular day, usually I get a solid six hours. Haven't done a great deal. Tried to make some cardboard models for the covers but this really can't be done without the GFX card. One thing I did workout was that the little storage card would not be used this time. I can put the drives in here and still have plenty of room for the cables. This makes things a lot more tidy and saves me from the problem of working out how to stealth the power and data cables. I'll be back, just can't say "soon".
The Storagecard was a nice idea. 1 Idea for the cables would be to have the plugs on the backside of the case and to have a calbeslot there too. Then the cables could be invisible too and you would have this nice idea. But I know that you will come up with something better.
Damn. I really liked the storage card. Of course, putting them on the bottom makes more sense but the card had that 'wow' factor.
It sounds like you are having issues getting your prize winnings from MOTY. It has been five months now right? Anything other than the graphics card? I sense a huge quantity of patience being exercised here.
I liked the storage card as well, but I never get too attached to anything and it can be used in another project. I'm certain ditching this will benefit the aesthietics of the internals. Yes it's been a long time getting the prizes but the graphics card is the last prize to come. To be fair I did get lucky and recieve an i7 870 instead of an 860, and that's a 300 dollar difference over here.
I'll be honest, I was going to go spam the forums for my 20 posts, making semi-informative posts that would help me get my free shipping. But then I stumbled on this, got hooked, read the whole 18 pages. And... Wow. The dedication, the ingenuity, the art. It takes this hobby I've found in the last year to a whole new level. And one day, I want a family and a good job, but I wanted to keep this hobby. You've shown me that's possible, so thank you.
Easy : with his other camera, which is a Canon EOS 550D. The one close to the hard drives is a Canon EOS 350D (with, I guess, a 18-55 standard lens). The good point is : now I know oldnewby has a 550D, I also know he can make some videos. So, now, I'll be waiting for videos
I'm still waiting for my power supply. They finally gave up on the original supplier and now they're sending me a suitable replacement. BT always makes good!
The great part about that storage card is that you easily could use it in another build. Sad to see it go as it was a great piece of engineering. You know, making a PCI-x1 SATA card that had the hard drives integrated on to it could be a nice little project in it's own right. Power would still be an issue though, I suppose. See you "soon".
So i take it from your change of plans oldnewby that you SORT of make it up as you go along? Thats pretty awesome. As someone that is just about to start hacking at parts of his pc, how often did things go horribly wrong in the first few mods?
