First off, I'm not sure this is in the right place. If it would be better in the gaming thread then so be it. My situation is basically that one of the hard drives (I think the 40GB) from the computer in my sig is going to die soon. To remedy this and to feel safer I was looking at getting a Mybook World Edition 1.5TB NAS. My question is whether my PS3 will be able to detect this NAS even if my computer isn't on. This way I can still listen to music and watch movies without such a high electric bill. I've googled the same question and the answer seems to be a solid...maybe. If you get lucky. But most of the threads are from 2007 so I was thinking Sony might have fixed the problem since then and that maybe one of the PS3 owners here might know? In case it matters my network is simply a Linksys WRT54GL router with an ethernet to the desktop and another to the 250GB PS3 Slim. With some wireless connections thrown in for other computers.
Does it have a DLNA server in it and are your videos/Music in a format that the PS3 is able to play without conversion? If not, then the answer is most probably no.
The PS3 can play all my files fine right now, and for the DLNA server I assume you mean the NAS? I'm not so sure about that.
Assuming that the NAS, PC and PS3 are all connected to the same network and that the PS3 can play the file you should be fine. BioSniper - yes it does: Built-in media server for streaming music, photos and movies to any DLNA certified multimedia device such as Playstation 3, Xbox 360, wireless digital picture frames, and connected audio receivers. DLNA 1.5 & UPnP certified.
Ok, so the with the Mybook my PS3 will be able to play all the movies/music (like it does now) from the Mybook without even having to turn my computer on? Perfect!
