Hello, Happy new year to you all! Bit of a long time lurker, so thought it was finally time to join and grab some advice on a bit of a annoying problem if possible? A bit of background info: I have a Virgin branded cable N router downstairs to which Laptops, iphones etc normally connect to wirelessly. At the same time there is a wired network throughout the house, with a couple of switches at various places for printers and NAS etc. In one room (the problem one) I have a gigabit Netgear switch, which feeds: Apple TV Blu ray Sonos ZP90 HTPC (Windows 7) Readynas Duo (main media NAS) Buffalo Linkstation (Odds and Sods and backup NAS) This is fed from another switch with another linkstation NAS on, and then fed from the router. Everything seemed to be ok and working. Yesterday however I bought myself a nice shiny new Sonos ZP90, which is great by the way, and got it all plugged in and set up. I installed the Sonos desktop controller software on my laptop (Windows 7, Wifi) to add my music shares, which is when I discovered the problem. I tried to add a share from my Readynas but my laptop couldn't find the Readynas on the network. I also tried to add the music on my D: drive but wouldn't let me for some reason. I did the usual network/computer restart hoping it would find it again but to no avail. I also tried plugging the laptop into the switch directly but to the same result. This was all down as admin, on all machines. A bit of further tinkering and for some reason my laptop cannot see any NAS drives nor itself under the "computer" section of Networks in Windows 7. It can however see them as "Media Devices" and on my Readynas duo as a "storage device. When I click on the Readynas duo storage device icon it then opens the device web page Frontview. The laptop can see other computers ok though. Checking my HTPC (Windows 7) I went into the network view and low and behold everything was there, all computers, all three NAS, and was able to explore them as normal no problem. Installed Sonos on here, found the Readynas, added the share, all working. Both installs are from the same copy of windows 7 Pro, and both machines are fairly similar as regards installs. The only difference is that my laptop has obviously traveled and connected to other networks. I also used it with work a lot using manual Ip's but have checked to see and everything is back to auto and DHCP to be honest. Sorry to go on a bit, but hopefully it all makes sense! If anybody has got any ideas, thoughts to make the NAS drives appear as computers that would be fantastic. Thanks Ian
Have you tried accessing the NAS and others from Windows Explorer with the share name? i.e. //ReadyNAS Or failing that can you map the NAS as a network drive? I know this isn't a solution to the exact problem, but will help to know if your Laptop can even access them from anything other than the Web front-end.
