Since there is no introduction section like other forums, I'll just say hi to everyone here:) I am not new to home-build but first I need a router to replace my Belkin Wireless G F2D7230-4 v7002. Lately it has been crapping out the wireless connection by torrent connections. I need a router that also has QoS as I use voip. The router I have in mind is DIR-655. Will it do the job?

Your suggestion costs a bit more than I intend to spend as it is a modem router and I only need a router. After posting yesterday, I did some research and found out the consensus was that the 655 wasn't as good with it latest firmware and the firmware cannot be downgraded.

What is your issue with the latest firmware? I have a DIR-655 with the latest firmware, and there are no problems whatsoever.

    I have a revision A4 with Firmware Version : 1.21EU

So I DON'T have the latest firmware after all.

I couldn't see in that thread exactly what the fault is with 1.3x firmware though. People were saying it's bugged... but no specifics.

Either way, I never reflash things unless I have problems. My router has been up for months without a restart and no problems here.

How about a Linksys E3000? Gigabit, wireless N, QoS, simultaneous dual band, etc.

    I have a D-Link DIR-655, I think the firmware is 1.34EU or something.

I haven't run it for about nine months but will soon be using it combined with an ADSL modem (ADSL internet now). I did run it for about two year with Virgin cable. I really like it, great router, lots of options and really reliable.

I had my heart set on the D-link 655 but we are seriously considering of ditching Vermin. However, I don't understand why this is labelled as "For cable connections". Surely a router is a router and can be used with both cable and xDSL modems or am I missing something?

    or Linksys WRT320N.

i have it, stock firmware allows QoS and pretty much everything you'll need, i've put DD-WRT onto it since i wanted to use it to send magic packet to wake my computer.

only downside is that it's not simultaneous dual-band, so go for the E3000 if you have the cash, otherwise WRT320N is a great alternative

Cable routers have an ethernet WAN connection which connects to your ISP supplied cable modem via an ethernet cable.

ADSL routers have an ADSL modem built in. The WAN connection is a telephone line to your BT socket.

The Draytek Vigor 2820 router has both an ethernet WAN connection and an ADSL modem telephone socket connection meaning you could use it for either (or both in failover mode).

If you have a cable router and an ADSL internet connection, you will need an ADSL modem as well, such as a Draytek Vigor 120 or a D-Link DSL-320.

Let me put it this way, say if I went with BT and they supply me with a homehub, can I just use it as a modem and connect my "cable router" to it to take advantage of the gigabit LAN?

AFAIK, you would have two options with that scenario:

    1. Plug one of your gigabit router LAN ports into a homehub LAN port. This means you would lose one gigbit LAN port but it is the simplest. You would also have to ensure that you have turned off DHCP on your gigabit router as your homehub will be supplying IP addresses for your LAN.

    2. Configure your gigabit router as a router, rather than as a gateway. This means a static IP on the WAN interface of your gigabit router.

if its a cable router, and you dont want to connect machines seperately on the bt homehub, and the router is going to be handling everything else,

just plug a lan connection from the homehub to the wan port of the router, no need to worry about dhcp, it should just work.

It should work yes but you will be running two firewalls & NAT solutions in series, hopefully they won't misbehave with each other. To ease things make sure UPnP is enabled on both devices and see how you go.

If you manually enter any port forwarding rules you will have to do it on both devices.

In the end, I got a new d-link 855 on ebay. Everything's working including voip. The only thing that is puzzling me is the firmware. It's on 1.12EU, 2008/10/23. However,

The label on the outside of the box says H/W Ver: A3 F/W Ver: 1.12EU
The label on the back of the router says the same as above.
The LED device info says H/W Ver: A2 F/W Ver: 1.12EU.
The web config (top right hand) says Hardware Version: A2 Firmware Version: 1.12EU.
Clicking the Check Now button on the Firmware page says I'm running the latest.

As far as my research goes, A3 is just a LED change (change to mono or something). I am guessing the latest A2 firmware should work on this router but I didn't get any reply on the d-link forums. I don't really need to upgrade yet but I fear I won't be able to get 300Mbit when I get my wireless N adapter.
