My 2 cents, The two most important things about a DSLR are: 1. How does the camera feel in your hand and how do you like the interface and 2. What lenses do you plan on using/buying! Example 1: You are a traveler and only want to lug around one lens, then getting the 18-200mm VRII lens is your best bet, and then a D40x or D80 body. Example 2: You are wanting extremely fast lenses for low light situations or wanting a very shallow DOF, then using Canon and their 85mm f1.2 or 50mm f1.2 lens is your best bet. Example 3: All your friends have Canon/Nikon lenses, find out who has the most and best ones, get that camera and then borrow them all the time So in my opinion, the lens part is the most important, bodies come and go, but lenses have a significantly longer life, so base it more around them.
