My parents are looking for a laptop and my knowledge of laptops is low, so I'm hoping to get a few recommendations from you guys please.

Basically all they need it for is writing letters and for saving and viewing photos, but they have a budget of £400 which is probably more than enough. Would probably be useful to have a good battery life over other things.

All they have said is they don't want any cheap brands.

So can anyone recommend a laptop(s) for £400 or less for me?

    Thanks.

Cheap brands are what you're going to get for £400. Dell do the inspiron series laptops that are meant to be reasonably well priced for the specs but I've never had a dell. I had a hp and it was great but the current hp laptops (under £400) have a horrible trackpad and keyboard.

Someone I know just got a toshiba 17" laptop for £400 but I dont know the model. It seems pretty good quality to me (good keyboard, little flex etc.)

Get a Dell if you can at that budget - Simple and fuss-free.

Don't be tempted to buy Acer despite their cheapness, it's a false economy and you get worse than you paid for. Muck.

I had a Toshiba laptop back in the day and it was pants so I may avoid that. I'll have a look at Dell then. Any other recommendations? Planning on nipping to Currys/Comet/PC World with them tomorrow although will probably end up buying online as its usually cheaper?

Samsung have a very nice laptop for about £375 in curry's/pc world.

Think it's called s3511 or similar.
Bought one for my gf a month ago and it's really quick and feels nice too. Good spec for the price!

I like samsung I've never had any problems with theirs so I'll definitely check that one out.

The HP Pavillion range seem quite popular any got any opinions on those?

Just make sure you try the trackpad and keyboard. Some of the cheaper models have a horrible feel to them. I was looking at getting a laptop at around the £450 mark and the lenovo laptops were pretty well thought of, (z/g series). But got an iPad instead ;)
