    Hi,

Basically I need an ultraportable laptop. Been looking at the different options.
Get it really light and the speed goes down. Increase any features and weight goes up.

    How heavy is 2kg ?

Current real options Im looking at are

Dell XPS M1210 (2.1 kg with 9 cell battery)
    2.0 Ghz Intel Core Duo

    Sony TX2 Series (1.39 kgs)
    1.2 GHz Centrino

Any other options ? Any thoughts on the above ?

Whats putting me off the XPS is that it will weigh around 2.1 kgs. Is it really ultraportable then ?

And the speed is the disadvantage in the Sony. Really light, great looks, come with dvd-rw, wireless and bluetooth built in.

how heavy is 2kg? easy, 1 kilogrammes == 1 litre or water. find a 2 litre milk carton and fill it with water, thats 2kilograms. :) put it in your rucksack and see how easy it is to carry.

might want to add a little extra, there are always those extra's like charger, case, maybe a spare battery, media, etc.

as for the speed disadvantage, ask yourself what your are *really* gonna use the laptop for. if, for the sake of argument, its for uni, then maybe typing (word or IDE), the odd spreadsheet, poerpoint and a little light database work. do you *really* need 2ghz for running windows and word?

of course, the decision is yours, but as i say to everyone who asks me this question, its best to think of a lappy as an extention of your desktop, not as a replacement.

Sony SZ is something you might want to consider? Core Duo, yet under 2kg. I'd post more, but damn finals...

ok so i have an acer lappy right now i'm pretty content about.
u should check the aspire 5000 series (especially the 5024wlmi) too.
i got an acer aspire 5002wlmi it weighs about 3kg when i got the full package (so not only the lappy but also power cord mouse usb stick keypad...)I find it to be quite protable as i carry it along with me to school (university) which takes me first a half hour trip by bike to the train station then 15min by train and then a nice half hour walk and i can tell u it weighs far less then my school books.
I have a nice rucksack with a seperate padded compartiment (nike makes great rucksacks for lappy's) and it is very good to handle.
So yeah anything less then 3kg is very portable .
If u hear anyone nagging about the heavyness of a 3kg lappy u just know he's ultra-picky or he doesn't know sh"t what he's talking about.
so up to 3kg is portable enough i think in this range choose whichever lappy has the best performance

3kg while portable is not ultraportable. I already have an older laptop which checks in around the 3kg mark. While it can be done, its not what I am looking for. While on holidays this laptop has to be carried in addition to all my camera gear and every little bit adds up.

But I'll certainly have another closer look at the Dell XPS at 2.1 kg with the extended battery.

i was talking about 3kg with accessories.
So it is 2kg lappy and Another 1kg (moreless) accessories.
this accessories are: power cord and adapter, mouse, external hd,keypad and usb hub
    But whatever
2kg is very portable as u can still carry loads of accessories as i do ;-)

Didnt realise you were carrying around all that.

All I will need will be a mouse and the power adapter ... and maybe a external laptop hdd.

Going to fill up two litres of water in something and see what that feels like ... I really like the fact that the Dell XPS is almost as fast it gets. The sony is a bit on the slow side, although the battery life and weight are amazing.
