Im planning to Overclock my Q6600 to 4.5Ghz. I currently have the stock cooler. When the processor is @ stock speeds with the stock cooler the idle temp is around 47C. And when i run prime95 it goes beyond 65C. So i think i need an aftermarket cooler to overclock. I really dont know whether its good to go for water cooling or air cooling. Need advice. And if air cooling what are some good air coolers for the CPU. I live in Sri Lanka. Those coolers are not available here. So i want to get something from Ebay or Amazon.com
If u can, name a no. of coolers will allow me to get the above overclocks. Im currently interested in air cooling. But im not sure whether my target is possible with air cooling. I checked some items on ebay just now and most of them are over $30 Therefore pls arrange them in ascending order according to the performance. Then ill check one by one and buy one that is affordable.

No air cooler will cool a Q6600 at 4Ghz plus. The thermalright Ultra 120 can cope at 4GHz, but thats when its got two fans strapped to it and sounds like a jet engine at take-off speed. You sir need to stop, take one step back and use the forum search function and google. I understand this might be new, but posting alot of threads about one thing or another without doing any research first is annoying. Plus may i point out that the Q6600 speed increases above 3.6Ghz are not linear, there is a 'linear' increase in performance from 2.4Ghz up to 3.4Ghz or so, but then it starts to drop off. so in actual fact a Q6600 clocked at 4Ghz isn't that much faster than one clocked at 3.6Ghz. however i believe this mainly to be a memory bandwidth problem, hence the move to DDR3.
Cooler Rev7 won't come near 4GHz, it's an amazing budget cooler but its budget, the Cooler master V8 should do 3.8GHz - 4GHz if your chip agrees, the Corsair H50 may do 4.2GHz, but to hit your 4.5GHz target you'll need a full water cooling loop, and possibly even a phase changing setup... if you've got the spare cash why not just buy a new drivetrain - an i5, mobo and DDR3 ram will set you back £300... and you won't need to over clock, if this isn't an option my opinion would be to go with the H50 and see if you hit 4GHz
Doubtful, I have never seen a Q6600 stable at 4.5 using anything other than phase cooling. Why are you aiming for 4.5? Wouldnt you be happy with 3.8-4.0?
It is clear that he is still picking a figure arbitrarily out of the air, without meaning or research Why not pick 10Ghz or 1THz. Frankily the whole matter is rather annoying considering also he has not set a budget to which he can afford. I may as well tell him to keep the stock intel heatsink, but store and operate the machine with in a 0% humidity chamber that is temperature controlled to -10 degrees Celsius. I dont mean to sound cruel, its just the information he is looking for could be obtained via searching google. i understand people want to make sure there purchasing the best item for there money, but i wouldn't mind if he went and found a few heatsinks first, posted them and then asked about them, and if there were any other solutions availble. Also every CPU is different, mine seems to easily hit 3.6GHz and i could achieve this with the intel stock cooler supplied, be it the temps would climb pretty quickly usually to around 70 degrees celsius under load after 10min. i just googled 'best heatsink for 775' and found my way here in two clicks. http://www.frostytech.com/top5heatsinks.cfm
gawd dude, even if you managed 4.5GHz the voltage required to keep it stable for hours a day would reduce its lifespan to little over that of a mayfly, and as for 4.5GHz, why? 4GHz is enough and if your not satisfied with the performance of the chip at that frequency then you should buy an i5
Ok. Then if 4.5Ghz is too much i wont go for that. And then i searched a bit and found 2 coolers. Are they good. What do u think. http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master...8?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1261412759&sr=1-8 http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list...tronics&qid=1261413363&sr=1-30&condition=used The 2nd one is used. It says no mounting pins. Is thre a way to buy them seperately? And what is this CPU wattage measured in TDP?
1.) Neither of those will take the Q6600 near 4GHz, infact I'll ship you a medal if you stabilized 3.5GHz, 2.) Except for maybe PSUs and cases, extreme bargains or whole computers NEVER buy 2nd hand computer parts... their often not even that much cheaper than new 3.) TDP is a measurement of average power used (Intel) or Max power used (AMD) which is used to roughly indicate the heat produced and a rough indication of the cooling required
And i decided to limit my cost to $40 This $40 should include shipping costs as well. Would appreciate if someone could name some coolers for that price.
