    Hello fellow bit-tech-ers.

So for summer school my culminating task or big assignment has to be a 500 - 700 word persuasive or argumentative essay. Now I've written a few in the past but all mine seemed to be stretched for lack of arguments, so i was wondering if you had any good topics i could use. I have a small list but it doesn't hurt having extras.

So far i have these ideas:
    - Should cell phones be banned while driving
    - Advertising is it good or bad (manipulation)
    - Media influences people in good / bad ways
    - People shouldn't buy products made in sweat shops
    - Parents need to spend more times with their kids to promote family value
    - Pollution and greenhouse gases are destroying our planet
    - single parent families... more specifically shared custody of the child, is it healthy or not
    - internet, is it a good tool for homework or bad

I need my rough copy done for Monday, so i was planning to write it up Saturday and Sunday. I just wanted a few more ideas to add to the list. I need nothing about the war and whatnot as firstly I'm Canadian, and secondly, there's probably a few people doing it already. I wanted something different, no abortions or anything as they are just too popular and have been done many times. I want something different, something that she'll read and be like this is a new fresh idea.

    Thanks in advance :D

"People shouldn't buy products made in sweat shops"

might be a good one to try - especially since the viewpoint of the people who are working is never expressed. Whereas there is the obvious considerations of moral wages, we also must consider the alternatives. A poor woman in Bangladesh who might earn 250BDT a week doing housework for a family (~£2.00, and pretty much the only job available in the past) may earn around 2000BDT (~£15) in a garments factory. This might sound unbelievably low, but is more than enough to pay the rent, feed the family, send the kids to school and buy some clothes (in Bangladesh anyway...)

The important thing to remember here is that a persuasive argument doesn't have to be on a hotly contested topic or controversial one like the list you have there.

Pick a subject you know a VAST amount about, regardless of its relative importance, you are being judged on the persuasive argument and research you do, not the topic itself. As an example, my persuasive arguments would hinge on musical appreciation and the benefits of playing an instrument, because I have a lot of background knowledge to pull from.

And thats a far more unique and interesting topic than any of the social or moral panics people assume these essays must address.

(Its also great because you know your opinion won't be a polar opposite of the teacher in questions, whereas with other subjects thats not a certainty. Writing an essay on women in the workplace for a female audience can be a very bad idea!)

I wanted to do windows vs mac but my teacher was complaining how she got a new computer with windows vista and she didnt know what the heck to do besides it looked difference. And i tried to ask her the pc spec's and she just kinda looked and me and was like it's a dell, it has windows vista... She was kinda clueless lol... I think a good topic for me though is the family thing, as i am growing up with 2 brothers and a sister, and my two parents, and my family is really close. I'm a good kid, and we all listen to our parents, while other people who dislike their parents are the bad kids that don't listen and whatnot. But I'm really not sure. The music idea sounds great, but I myself don't play any instruments... Though i'm sure i could pull something off... If you play an instrument usually it keeps you occupied as your committed to learning how to play and to improve constantly, so this teaches responsibility, as you get better you become more and more confident which would increase your self worth and you would feel better about yourself, and umm... It keeps you busy so instead of say going out and doing something you might regret, you could be expanding your music knowledge by listening to new things, and learning new things, and becoming a more accomplished artist of some sort. Think if i wrote that decently i could pull off something decent?

Why do modders mod? Teachers inherently have little knowledge of our sub culture. We mod because - personal expression, the human nature to explore and make it better, artistic expression IE. Filimon, Bodaker, E.E.L Ambiense, Cheapskate, the list goes on. I would never try to explain Darkblade, other than a museum quality expression of ones self and abilities. Many of the Bit-Tech mods have absolutely no purpose to anyone who doesn't understand US. I've tried to explain US to my peers - The closest I could come is hippy artists from the '60's. It's an expression of who we are and what trips our trigger at any given moment.
    I'm done.

Well said jhanlon, when i told my friends i was building a pc and painting my case my friends were like OMG HOW THE HELL DO YOU BUILD A PC?!?! ISN'T IT HARD! Then they like why would you paint your case, why not buy a new one. They don't realize quality cases are $$$ and when your in high school working part time $$$ comes slowly. But education before fun.

Cabe, that is an excellent idea, i will definitely add that to my list of possibilities, and it really does interest me as my part time job i work at a mechanic shop doing odds and ends, helping the mechanics, taking care of customers, detailing cars, etc. etc.

Loving the idea's and criticism guys. Thank you :D

Make sure of your subject-verb agreements, or you'll be marked down for grammar.

thanks for the heads up. I'll make sure to get a few people to edit my draft, can't have simple mistakes. I've noticed having someone edit my work really helps though, i never used to do it but now that I've started i see mistakes and awkward sentences that i never noticed before.
