Ok I'm sick of the noise thats coming out of my machine :cries: I have 3 YS-Tech 35CFM fans @ 27Db, a hard drive cooler with 2x40mm fans inside and the stock cooler on my Geforce 2 Ultra. The main cause for my problems is my modded volcano 7 fan which runs at 53CFM and around 40Db. So what I need from you is some tips on getting the Db down, I'm mainly thinking with going with some sound dampening? My case is a cheiftech Dragon (pic below) what should I buy
Yeah, watercooling is definitely an option, but the sound damping stuff from chillblast is supposed to be pretty effective!
I've reviewed some sound dampening material on www.blagged-hardware.net and it's not the panacea you're looking for. I'm afraid that it is become as simple as if you want a powerful machine (even not overclocked), you have to accept some noise. If you're overclocking with air cooling, then you DEFINATELY have to accept noise. That is the way the world is I'm afraid.
I'll tell you what cut noise levels in my PC by a helluva lot and got rid of the 'whine' which is the main problem with PC users...I mean cases. http://www.dansdata.com/fanmaint.htm I had a few 40mm fans which were a bit too small so grabbing an old hypodermic :dude:, filled it with oil, pushed the plunger back in and voila. Precision oiling. (small tip - make sure you have a hypo with a cap on it ) And if you're able to afford that thermal dampening stuff (£25+) then I'd suggest selling that Thermaltake and getting a bigger heatsink (Swiftech or Alpha PAL (better value imo)) and stick a quiet fan on it.
I'm not actually using the Volcano 7 Heatsink just the fan which is strapped to a FOP-38 Heatsink with some nice results 33.C Idle 52.C full load (at most, normally around 48.C). I'm not too sure about water cooling I'm good at killing components as it is add water to the equasion and I can imagine the results plus it's very expensive. I think I'll have to go with a lot of sound proofing whiich product id my best option.?
you could try changing the heatsink and mounting a larger fan on it which would produce the same airflow but turn slower so it would be quieter. Another thing i can recommend is getting a baybus to turn your fans on off. So when your system is idle you can turn the fans off but when you are playing games you can turn them all on.
a fan adaptor would be good, overclock.co.uk sell those as well as Akasa paxmate (sound dampening for the PC) £25 if I remember correctly. chillblast.com sell Noisecontrol's thermal fleece which is supposed to be better but does cost quite a bit more at £40. A baybus is what I've used with good results. Just flick those switches when I want to run a game or do something processor intensive. Then again, there's always this.... http://www.dansdata.com/tmdfan.htm heheh
It actually says in that review... It's a german company and it'll cost 15 euros + shipping. You did read that there's only 70mm sizes at the moment?
you can get a baybus from www.baybus.co.uk (seems to be the best place by far) or www.coolcasemods.com. Other websites sell the pcmods baybus but they seem to be all out od stock at the moment.
I just focused on this part dogbait "47.8CFM for the 3000RPM one" and was like WOW! I want this one here lazydemon but they aren't selling them online yet and I'm too crap and lazy to make one myself.
DO NOT USE A FAN ADAPTER WITH A FOP!! The clip is REALLY REALLY bad and it will likely break, most probably killing your Tbird and/or gfx card too. Get rid of it, get an alpha 8045 + evercool. My 1.4 Tbird doesnt go over 45C with evercool + MC462, however i do have quite a bit of case air flow. Swap the ystechs for more evercools or LA1 panaflos and you should have a v.quiet case. Next youll complain your harddisks are too loud and want a cooker aka silentdrive to stick em in. watercooling isnt really that silent cause u need a fan on the res, but u can have it at 7v (120mm panaflo LA1s are great!), and itll give u better temps then an evercool+alpha combo.
There is no fan adapter Bindibadgi I've modded the fan so that I can get to the screw holes and attached the clip directly to the fan it's self. It's been on there for two weeks and hasn't moved a mm and if the clip can take a 5000rpm 60mm fan then I can't see an 80mm being too much of a problem as long as it's properly secured down. It feels very secure but I take your warning very seriously and the last thing I want is a 5000rpm fan flying around my case. I think it's time to look into a new HSF but I've already spent too much money on this damn machine as it is and all the real decent ones cost like £60 What do you guys think of the Zalman flower coolers I am concidering buying one as they are very quite and my freinds getting 44.C with his 1900+ @ 1.70Mhz. Any experiences?
i used to work at a club b4 i got my new job and in the dj booth they used a thick foam that dampens 200+db to bout 40db so mabe u could get that its not expensive but it is hard to come by
Don't worry I've got a fop 32 with a 80mm fan on it and its been on it for over 1 1/2 years but that is a 3000 rpm verison. I did it a similar way as you by the sounds of it, I put a fan guard on under the fan and used the clips to connect to the fan guard. I think it I saw it first in a guide @ pcpowerzone.
you could email the guy and ask him when they will be on sale online. They look pretty good but it is at the back f your pc and you don't get to see it. I have a on, off and 7v baybus and as i have a chieftec dragon all the leds glow from behind the door at night and look really cool.
