Hey all. I have just got my WoW guild up and running again and need a forum. We used to run a PhP based forum. The person who maintained this and dealt with it has quit now.

I have done a yahoo search for free forum software and found many many sites. Im very dubious just picking one. For all I know they could monitor my pc or do some other fancy hacking. I looked at Forumotion.com. This seems a nice fit but again I just dont trust all this free stuff. Many WoW guilds seem to use guildomatic; I have no idea if this is a safe option. I tried 1and1.com but they said they dont deal with forums.

What I basically want is some advice. Maybe someone has been through this process and can guide me to a good solution. I would preferably want to use my own domain name to. This just looks better. Im not adverse to paying a monthly fee either. If anyone has suggestions that would be great. Thank You

    Lee

Well, i would recommend SMF (simple machines forum).
It's as safe as any other forum software IMHO.
It's pretty versatile and it's easy to set up.

If you were to splash out a little bit of cahs, you could get vBulletin, which is pretty much as big as it gets. For that matter, these very forums run on it.

Have you tried www.invisionfree.com/? They have a pretty good forum system and you can set up your own domain. I've never had a fault with them and used to have some forums with them my self at one point.

Or even www.zetaboards.com/ same people but using a different forum system.

They are both great option i have found and recommend them both. both easy to set up and customisable, there is also great community support for them.

Some mates and myself tried the latest Vanilla release the other day, and found it to be rather erratic - not letting people log in, etc.

I have used phpBB last a couple of years back, and i liked it.
However, the site I was using it on got hacked through phpBB. Only the forum was compromised (thank heavens), but that's never happened again since i installed SMF instead.
