I've got a cable that leads to a car power adapter. It's black, and one of the wires has a white stripe on it. Which one is the grounding wire?

    Use a multimeter.

The striped one SHOULD be the live one. In fact they're often labelled positive somewhere along the stripe. But use a multimeter.

it's only one way to find out for sure: measure it.

I have seen the white stipes beeing used to mark both positive and negative.

Or, if you don't have a multimeter, use an LED... You might burn it out, but if it's right, it'll light up...
