Is there a need. Everyone on here can understand you fine and Im sure everyone else in Britian and USA could. Althought thats only based on you typing. Looked around your town for lessons in English? If your Going to the US or coming to the UK, it shouldent take long to pick up the finer details.

Speak for yourself. I find half the stuff computerking says to be unintelligable. Oh and if you're going to learn to speak it really well, at least do the decent thing and learn British English. Our rules at least have some history in their nonsensicality.

Your English writing has clearly improved since you started posting here. Have you heard the phrase "practice makes perfect"? I think your written English is very good, especially when you aren't using shortened words. If you want to practice then try and type all of your posts out properly and ask for comments. The general standard of writing on this forum (apart from mine:)) is very good.

Learning to speak a language needs practice too. You need to hear it as well. Do you know any other English speakers? Xbox live DOES NOT count :)

ps. the thread title should be: I need to learn English. Or, I need to learn good English.

Habibi, what school are you attending now and is the main language English or Arabic? If you want English fluency, you need to be speaking and hearing it daily. And not on TV. Your writing has improved since you started here, but needs a lot more work. I would suggest joining a sports team or club where most of the people are british, american or canadian. I would suggest dating a british girl, but I think that is out of the question with your parents.

You have to read more. If your in the UK for 3 years or more you get free lessons at any college.

Ok, so most of it (well almost all) isnt up to your super high levels of grammar. You can still make out what he means.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Perhaps I just don't try very hard, but I certainly find plenty of it confusing. That's not meant as an offensive thing, my arabic is non-existant, and ComputerKing's English is very good for someone who doesn't live in a country with English as the first language. I simply don't understand some of the things he writes (although I suspect that if a bit more time was taken during posting I'd understand a great deal more).

CK's spelling is generally excellent, his sentence structure and grammar need some improvement however.
I'd advise listening to TV shows which use BBC English (recieved pronounciation) as the norm, news channels are pretty good at this. Also, take your time, I know I recheck all my posts for spelling and grammar errors, and I suspect others do too.

Then you're probalbly as bad as english as he is, only its your first language! People who whine about stuff like his idea of english are just too lazy to try and read it properly, imo.

Your english is fine computerking, but I think maybe you should take a bit more care in writing things out. The best way to learn and reinforce information, and to build on it, is to teach it and use it correctly. If you think about what you write and criticise it, and then modifiy it, you will learn.

edit: Can people stop being so ****ing snobby, christ.

    OK, let's be objective now.

Computerking's English does suck a bit (sorry, but it does). That doesn't make him a dumb or lesser person; he may be fluent in French for all I know (whereas I most empathically am not) and my Arabic is non-existent.

Also, what is good enough for a forum is not good enough for the professional world at large. I wonder whether his question here is connected to his questions about planning a career in computing. I must admit my first thought then was: "In order to pursue a successful career in computing, he'll need to speak a lot better English...". He obviously has drawn similar conclusions.

American films are no good: he'll just pick up bad habits that are hard to shed later (as I have in Sign Language, working with Deaf colleagues...). What he needs to do is tune into BBC World Service, every day, all day. Let it play in the background. Listen to the language, the pronunciation and its use. Join an advanced English class. His parents are likely to support such worthy educational aspirations so he will most likely not have to pay for it himself.

On the forums, he can re-read before posting (puctuation and paragraphs help to organise), and use the spellchecker plug-in for Firefox, or the one on IE7 Pro for Internet Explorer. We can give him constructive feedback, without either ridculing him or ignoring his bad English because we can somehow manage to unscramble it. Within a year, he should be well up to standard.

I think if CK wouldn't be so impulisive, think over his posts a lot more, and reread them after he typed it out (before posting) it would allready improve the readability of his posts.

Also, read a lot of quality articles that float around on the internet, that's how I learned English, and I don't think it's too shabby for a non-native speaker.

You know what? You're right. It's not so much lazy I suppose as simply not bothering, but I won't put effort into reading things that other people want me to read.

We write stuff so that people can read it. If you want someone to read something, you should take the time to make that process simple and easy for them. This is what grammar and spelling are about. I suspect if CK took a minute or two longer to make his posts, they would become far more intelligable for considerably less effort. I apreciate that CK may be doing his best while writing, but I think a minute or two of checking over posts would help a lot (that applies to everyone imo).

Edit: Yup Glider, it's perfectly understandable. Which is all anyone really needs on the internet.

As for ways of improving English, mine was atrocious before I start regularly posting on forums. Over the last several years as I've been posting on forums with mostly grownups on them, it's improved a lot. It's not perfect by far, but good forums definitely improve English.

Umm...no. I'm suggesting he improve his language skills so that people may understand him without effort and so that when he writes or asks questions (as he does fairly frequently, which is fine) people don't need to expend extra time on translation.
