Hi all, My Uni has been contacted by SpaceX stating that they are looking for -paid- interns. Awesome! However they are only going to accept 2 interns. Not Awesome! So I have been working on my Resume and adding things, removing things, etc. My question is, how do I really make myself standout from the rest? The email states that we should email our resumes to a person but I am also thinking of including a cover letter as a first page to the resume. Is this wise? Also, any ideas in this area would be helpful and if you would like to see a copy of the resume and the internship guideline sheet just PM me and I can email it to you. Thanks.
Spent time working with John Hanlon? Have you done any extra curiculur stuff which would be attractive to SpaceX. I would assume that every one applying has outstanding qualifications etc so your going to have to sell yourself on non-course related stuff. Imo...
Perhaps going and handing your resume/application in person would be a good idea. If you can of course. Actually I doubt SpaceX has a shop on your high street. But the advice is good when applicable
Personally, I would have the cover letter form your e-mail to the contact rather than including it in a resume file. You need to tailor your resume to make it applicable to SpaceX - put yourself in their shoes and make sure that you can tie every line in your resume back to something that SpaceX would be interested in. You need to make yourself sound indispensable to them, but don't lie or exaggerate. The resume itself shouldn't be longer than 2 pages, and make sure that all of the really important stuff is on the first page - they're likely to a lot of applications, so the first sift will just be based on a quick scan of the first page of your resume.
@ Fibble: That is what I have been doing with my resume. I keep an generic template that has all the information filled in and when I apply for an internship I go back and re-edit everything to make it more attractive to the company I am applying for. Also, your first line doesn't make much sense, other than the not including it with the resume file, could you elaborate on what you mean? @Steveo: Well my extracurricular activities and jobs include being VP of the rowing team, working with NYPD, being a pilot, and a lot of volunteering with local groups. I am trying to find some that are more suited to Aerospace engineering, however I am not sure how I can re-phrase anything. The big requirement is a >3.5 GPA which I have and which also cuts out 80% of the people enrolled in the department. And I wish I spent time working with John. That would be fcking awesome.
well the pilot bit is good, shows you have a physical understanding of flight as well as theoretical, rowing team is good as you have learnt that working in a team requires coordination leadership etc and volenteering shows that if you do have a passion for something you will go out of your way to do it and help have you researched the company, and i mean in depth and not just a quick wikipedia search, find out its current goals/projects/vision/problems and try and show your knowledge of them and direct your information around that and how you are perfect for the position and have a passion for the same goals as them
What I meant was have the content of the cover letter (that you were planning on putting in the resume) in the e-mail. So rather than the e-mail just containing "Hi. Here's my resume", use your cover letter.
Aha! Got it and will do. @minimad: what would you like to know about SpaceX? I have been following them since 2008 and the Falcon 1 launch, and more recently the Falcon 9 launch
well the question is what is your speciality? what do you like best are you a materials person, aerodynamics, electronics, chemist (fuel), maths (theoretical calcs), basically look at what you like the most in what you are studying and then match it up to what SpaceX are doing and the potential challenges they could be/are facing and use (from your research) then base your application around this, hopefully your 'love' of that part of your course will come across in the application
My specialty is dynamics whether it is Fluid dynamics, Thermal, or newtonian. I am planning on putting a lot of that in to the Cover Letter since that is one of the key positions that they are looking for.
Damn 3.5 GPA requirement... Something that helps your application stand out beyond your GPA, is if you are involved with any projects/groups that are related to the field. Such as the University CubeSat program, or any other aerospace related projects. Showing you have practical experience can sometimes be beneficial, but I suppose that would depend more on what position you are interested in applying for. What Internship were you interested in specifically? Or were you just going to send your resume to them in general. At any rate good luck! I was eying those internships earlier but the GPA requirement filters me out, but they look like they would be great fun!
Thanks! I am probably going for the Thermal Dynamics and Heat Transfer position. As for GPA I have a 3.56 so I am just making the cut-off.
