Graphics Need video card for Dell 30"

    Looking for a card for Mrs new dell 30" - I ballsed up by buying one of them x800xl dual dvi-s at £82 from the devils spawn.. Which of course is useless with the dell.

    So whats the cheapest one with a dual link connector that is similar performance?

    I think the cheapest card you'll find that has a dual-link chip is a 7800gt on the nVidia side, and probably an x1800-something from ATI. There's a slim chance that the this-gen midrange cards (7600/x1600 I think) have it, but I'd confirm that.

    I just checked a random 7600gs and it does. Also checked a Sapphire x1300, and it says max res 2560x1600 which would indicate that it does support dual-link too. Around that performance level, you'd be looking at the this-gen midrange cards. I'd double-check the card because from five minutes of checking Newegg, it appears that dual-link is a vender option and not reference, at least on ATI cards.

    Many Thanks - its a minefield finding the info - the x1600xt from Sapphire does 2560*1600 as does the Connect 3D version but not many others - Wife prefers an ATI so may go for the Saphphire later. Seen it at 93 UK pounds so not too bad.

    :thumb: X1600XT is a decent card, comparable to an X800XL and a pretty safe bet for dual-link DVI. X1600Pro is a fair bit slower while X1800XL is a fair deal faster (but pricier and hungrier). I would recommend ATi over nVidia to you and as you've found the X1000 series cards over the X_00.

    Better texture filtering, for one. Also, every time you see that rediculous "nVidia: The way it's meant to be played" advertisement, you can feel happy knowing your dollars aren't going to fund things like that.

    Ive never thought of it that way, you actually make a good point, although both companys advertise, that is possibly one of the most irritating things ever. Im not a fan boy, I buy what evers best for my budget. But you have started me thinking there :)

    :D When it comes to DVI, dual-link and HD support ATi have been more consistent and for this reason you'd be better going for ATi X1000 series cards, although GF7 should be fine if those were the key factors (as it seems to be for Oclocker) then ATi are simply a safer bet IMHO.

    7600 series has a single dual link DVI, as does X1300-series (and up). I don't think that there's a difference between which you buy, in all honesty. :thumb:

    The cards that have at least one dual link DVI port are as follows:

    Radeon X1300-series
    Radeon X1600-series
    Radeon X1800-series
    Radeon X1900-series
