The pendrive Slax I occasionally play with (to remind me how user-friendly Windows really is  ) takes a while to boot, but don't forget it's finding your hardware and installing drivers for it from scratch every boot. That's an advantage in my case, as I can plug it in to any modern machine.

Couple that with the slower speed of CD or pendrive compared to HDD...

Well got Slax to run by using the following cheatcodes: acpi=off pnpbios=off noapic noapm This works and relatively fast as well. My laptop will not boot from the pendrive, but I think I can live with that as long as I can setup the TS and Vent servers I want to run on it and burn them to the CD. Maybe that will not work and I will have to go back to the USB booting thing. Does anyone know what the cheatcode is to use the CD to boot from the USB? (or do I have to go use google :search: :wallbash: ;) )

    Edit:
    <-- cool 100 posts :D

Don't call them cheatcodes... they are boot parameters... Nothing cheaty about them...

For USB drive booting, I'd think it will have to be some kind of chainloading (like when Grub boots to XP), but I can't help you on that one... Google will probably give you some answers tough.

LOL I didn't come up with the name.

Anyway for now if I can get it to run off the CD I'm happy

Edit: in case other people are watching this thread, I found here how to make a boot loader CD for Slax Boot Loader

One of these adaptors used with either CF Flash Mem (read Only) or a iPod Mini HDD would do the trick.

I'm converting my file server to run off the iPod mini HDD as I picked up a broken 4GB one on ebay for £12. If you have enough mem, it will work fine ;)
