Graphics Needing a GPU for 1920x1080

    Hey folks,

    Bout to buy an Iiyama E2208HDS which runs natively at 1920x1080, and since I've only got an 8800GTS 640 right now, I was thinking I'll probably need an upgrade in graphics card.

    Since I'm not very familiar with the realistic capabilities of graphics cards atm, I was just wondering, do I need to buy an AMD 4870, or would an AMD 4850 be perfectly capable of doing games nicely at 1920x1080? I play all the latest and most punishing stuff generally, but the 4850 does sound like it's got a good bit of grunt. Thoughts?

    what games do you play, what detail level are you willing to play at, and how much are you willing to spend?

    i play at 1920x1200 with the exact same card - see siggy.

    As long as you are willing to play with settings a bit, you are perfectly fine with this card. Example: i played Assassins Creed on all the highest settings, never had one problem. COD 4 same story, though that's not as demanding graphically.
    My advice would be to wait untill you are actually playing and being hindered by the card, then upgrade to a 4870. I'm told the 4850 isn't even that much of an improvement over the good old 640 :D

    Ah hah. Interesting. Sounds like it might be a plan. My CPU is limited to 1.8Ghz atm because I broke my mobo a little (voltmodding is bad kids!), so I guess I'll sort that out as the priority, instead of graphics. Cheers Xtra.

    Chris, like I say I play all the latest games. I'll be playing Farcry 2, Assassins Creed, I play Cod4, Crysis. World in Conflict. All the heavy hitters.

    I'd recommend the HD 4850, it's pretty much standard for budget-gamers... plus it'll be quicker saving up for a new motherboard and a 4850 than a mobo and 4870 :p

    Saving up? What is this nonsense you speak of! Student loans and overdrafts were created for computer upgrades.
