Alright Got a problem (!) Basically I have 2 computers at home networked to the internet via a router, I'm running Windows XP. I was using one of the computers, when I switched the computer off, then the next day when I tried to access the internet, I got an error message saying "Local Area Connection: Network Cable Unplugged". There is a big red cross over the computer icon in XP. My other computer is able to access the internet without any problems however. I had'nt touched the computer at all, or the leads (I have checked everything is connected just in case!) I have tried changing the leads with the computer that still can access the internet, but that does not work. The computer that does not work uses an NVDIA nforceMCP networking adapter ? Any help greatly appreciated, I'm a complete novice with computers! Thanks in advance, Spinbak
Have you updated the nVidia ForceWare drivers recently? Go check in Device Manager and see whether the Network card listed in there has a red "X" or a yellow "!" mark. If so, it might be a driver problem. If not, it may well be a hardware failure
Switch it to a different port on the router to see if it is a dead port, swap out the cable with another, try a different NIC. unless you have something serious going on, one of those things should fix it.
i know this might be a stupid question but it is set to obtain an IP automatically??? what you might want to try is run -> CMD -> ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew
The red x just means that the device is not enabled, make sure that the device says enabled when you double click it in the device manager. Then go over to the resources tab and make sure that there is no conflics (will say so). If all that is fine it wouldnt hurt to reinstall the drivers for the nic. If that is all fine then I would release/renew the ip. If not you can always contact your isp tech support. JEEVES
