Hey. My cousins computers internet stopped working all of a sudden. While trying to fix it, i clicked on "obtain an IP address automatically" in the internet protocol properties. They were manually done like a year ago, so i cant remember how to configure it. The IP address is the same as this computer, which is the one connected to the net, the subnet mask is the same, but i cant default gateway i cant remember. Also, i forgot what the DNS settings are. Both computers can "see" eachother, but i cant figure out way this has happened. First i need the right network settings first Kye.
so they are connected via router or internet connection settings or what? default gateway would be the ip of the device thats gets you out onto the net. dns server would be the device that translates names to ip address. usually at home they are your router and pc get all the settings automatically via dhcp
It dont work doing it automatically. I had help last time from a msn friend who i lost contact with who knew alot about this. on the other computer, what do i need to do manually? what for IP address do i type in? I know nothing about this so dont assume ill know what your on about if you try to explain rather then telling me how to do it. Kye.
Your PC and our cousin's can't have the same IP on the same network. On your PC goto START>RUN>type 'CMD' in the DOS box type 'ipconfig /all' and jot down the IP's of the active network adapter. Your cousin should be set to the same subnet/gateway/dns except for the IP address itself, the last digit should be (logically but not necessarily) one more or less than your number.
