Need details on the network cards, the cable types you used (i.e. crossover or patch) or if it's wireless, the hub/switch/access point/router. We need to know how you set up the network, if you used a wizard, how the computers are connected, etc

When you say cannot ping itself, what EXACTLY can't it ping?

Can it ping 127.0.0.1? If not, check you actually have IP installed.
Can it ping its own IP? If not, prolly a problem with the network card/drivers/cable/whatever (this one's the hard one)
Can it ping its own hostname? If not, you're problem lies with WINS (and can usually be fixed just by messing with stuff).

well i can give you all that info, but the thing is, it's been working fine for months, then i installed norton internet security and it stopped working. but the thing is that even if i disable the firewall, or even uninstal it, it still doesnt work..it can ping 127.0.0.1....but no websites, pcs on the network or even the router

everything was set up manually... i got a router plugging into a hub, and other pcs are on the hub as well, they're not crossover cables

update: hmm, it's started to get a few ping packages through to my router... about 1 in every 4 sent....it takes roughly 2000ms though....
