The NAS I had recently bit the dust, and this started me looking at a network upgrade so I could get a new NAS and gigabit router with wireless N. So far I've narrowed the choices down to what I think looks like a good product, but any help would be appreciated.

So far I have my eye on two routers, both are simultaneous dual band with wireless N and gigabit ports. The two I have been looking at are the Linksys E3000 and the Netgear WNDR3700. Now from what I've read the Netgear has better performance, but I have a Linksys now and haven't had any problems with it; so any advice would be appreciated.

As for the NAS, the Synology DS209 looks like a good choice paired with 2 of the Samsung F3EG 2TB hard drives. Again, has anyone used these products or can give some first hand opinions?

If anyone can think of any alternatives feel free to suggest those too, I'm not set on these.

I have just ordered the Synology DS209 and Samsung hard drives (HD203WI). Had to buy Synology DS209 from Amazon for £225 as Scan was sold out (£216). I have not used a NAS before, but will let you know how it performs when it arrives.

You might want to consider the Synology DS210j (Scan price £157). It offers slightly less performance but is significantly cheaper. I decided to buy more powerful DS209 as I am new to the NAS game and wanted to be sure it was good enough. But you may find that the DS210j is sufficient for your needs.

You can read reviews of both at www.smallnetbuilder.com

Also I found the Synology forums very good for discussion on the pro's and con's of the 210j vs 209. http://forum.synology.com/enu/

I run a Belkin N1 Vision and 2 x Linksys NMH405's with 2 x Samsung 1Tb F1's in each (May change these to F3's to save a bit of power but it's what I had lying around).

Not really got down to the nitty gritty of using the NAS's yet, they are designed as media servers but i've just got them running as simple JBOD while I sort everything out.

I ordered one of the F3EG's and the Linskys last night from Newegg, and I'll be picking up the other hard drive and the Synology in a few weeks.

@Yehbaby - I saw the 210j for $100 bucks cheaper and considered it, but I decided on the 209 for the same reason as you. The better performance seemed to justify the cost. The 209+II was the NAS I was originally going to buy, but I couldn't find it in stock at any of the stores I normally use.

@Cookiemonster - I'm probably just going to run the NAS as a JBOD too. The only RAID I would consider is RAID 5 and I don't want to spend the extra money on a 4 bay NAS as well as 2 extra hard drives.
