i've got a network with my housemate, both computers are using WInXP pro.I'm the server and I want to limit his upload speed because he's using all those file share programs and he's actually "killing" our network connection by having a constant of 39kb/sec upload rate :wallbash: ..i tell him not to use those crapy sofrware but off course he never listens to me...blah

    PLEAAASE HEEELP!

    A coupl of things

Are your talking about internet bandwidth or just network. If its the internet broadband bandwidth he is using all up then why is he uploading so fast and what connection you got. I got 1mb and max upload is 30kb.

Anyway you could do what I did when I was sharing a house with 4 others and one person kept downloading so much all the time. I would just unplug the ****er when I wanted to use the internet or play a game online. He wouldnt control the amount or time of day for his downloads and not let anyone actually use the internet. He would come into my room and ask if there was anything wrong with the internet because his downloads had stoped. I just reply nothing mate its working fine here, maybe your download site is having problems too many downloads, give it a while and it be alright. That dumb £$£$£ beleived me everytime.

Or you can get some bandwidth moniters that let you controll the bandwidth comeing into you computer and out.

Try Allot NetEnforcer Bandwidth Manager Product. It has a very powerful monitoring and reporting. You can set bandwidth/policies by IP, range of IPs, subnet, host or even MAC address. To get more info, go to www.allot.com.

Or try this http://www.ydi.com/products/bcu.php. This can limit the bandwidth based on IP/mac address

im sure if you got broadband you must have a firewall?? If you got a firewall installed then scan his computer and find out what ports his file sharing software is using and add rules in your firewall to block those ports. He wont be able to download anything.

Some firewalls can have rules whcih can be schedualed. So you can add the rule to block those ports hes using during the day and open up during the night. Which is the way I work, I use the night time to do my downloading and uploading while everyones a sleep and the electricity is cheaper too. :)
