Trying for ages without success yet.

I networked for years my home XP machines.

I read many help files how to but, could not make it work.

Without doing anything to Vista laptop it can see all the Win8 drives & can read & transfer files there.

My w8 win-explorer list shows under Network the VISTA LAPTOP. When I click on it says cannot access, please see attached.

I believe I am Administrator as I carried out the info from this web site below. What else can I do?

    http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-8/log-on-as-administrator-in-windows-8/

Any help to get me networking from w8 will be appreciated?

I will guess the Vista PC has no password on the account? You should make same username/password on all machines in network it will auto authenticate. Otherwise you need to go into the sharing settings and disable password protected sharing.

    Thanx all,

Yes enabled file sharing in w8, Vista & Acer XP.

Both Vista & AcerXP see & Can work in w8 drives & files. W8 can not, although prints wirelessly .

I thing I saw disabled passwords somewhere but in W8 there is no option in the sharing settings to disable password protected sharing.

Where would it be in XP & Vista too?

The other thing in W8 I found now is that if I change from Busines to Home networkin it does not stay even after reboot as per instruction, see attached.

you'll probably need to turn off home groups on all the 7+ boxes, you're not part of a work network (no domain etc so keep it as a workspace), and once you've done those things you should be able to do \\server\share from all boxes. You'll need to share these with accounts that have passwords and when prompted just enter pcname\user and the pass.. then save it. Should be good

what is "all the 7+ boxes" ?.

there is no domain or homegroup ticked anywhere, & sharing is.

I am fearing that again I'll be chasing my own tail & coming to a dead end.

Would this have anything to do with it? :-

on the boxes running anything that has home groups (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1) turn them off.

Also no- you can be connected to the wifi and the cable at the same time.

    check firewall.

    Check:

    net use

in cmd and see if there is a listing for your vista machine.

So you are looking for \\LOUISE\* under remote. If it is listed type

net use [path to remote] /delete

That is the only thing I've ever happen to me. I'd saved bad details. Not sure how... but that is what I did.

    Probably a red herring...

The machines need to be in the same workgroup.
You need to have enabled sharing.
You need to have a user and pass on machines you are trying to access, or provide permissions to accounts on other machines (Through permissions tab).

If I remember correctly you would have to join a workgroup created by one of the computers. Should say somewhere "join workgroup". You will need to enter the generated password or a password of your choosing to join.

Have you tried creating the workgroup on the 8 machine and joining from the XP one ?

Change the network type to home or work.

If it's showing as public (like the picture shows it is) then filesharing won't work properly

As the Picture shows it's set to public I can only assume you've got a network error which is confusing Windows and enabling the firewall.

Does it work if you turn the firewall off completely?
