Not really a case mod etc but a whole project! My network is used by my work (web development) and my home cinema. I wanted to try create a lower powered network when running 24/7 as at the moment the file server was consuming between 100-150w! I also required a hardware firewall for some of the projects I have been working on. New equipment list: Low powered pfSense firewall (with 3 NIC) Low powered web server on 24/7 with half decent processing power 24 Port Managed Gigabit switch All cat6 cables Anyway some photos: Bit of a mess but the cinema setup, you can see the file server with UPS hiding in the left next to the speaker New cat6 cables: red: WAN Orange: DMZ Yellow: WIFI Black: Internal LAN Blue: Teamed NICs Green: no idea why I bought this HP ProCurve 1800-24 Gigabit switch (uses 19w power, little high but may look at turning this off when not needed) Server motherboard - this is a ITX Kontron 986LCD-mITX board using a Intel Core 2 duo T5600 CPU with 2x 1GB DDR2 memory modules. 2x 320GB 2.5" 5400RPM sata drives in software RAID1 on Ubuntu server 10.04 LTS PSU is a 120w no brand Cobalt RaQ 4i - I have always loved the look of these cases, picked it up cheap on ebay to house the server (will sell the internals as they still work perfectly) Internals: New motherboard mounted I know the back looks a mess, but I honestly couldnt care as once I have rack mounted it, who will ever see it? HDDs have been mounted using elastic to try reduce noise No cooling yet nor has the front panel been connected, need to trace the cables to see where they go. Im hoping the LCD uses parallell pins so I can link it to the header on the motherboard. (the LCD is a Powertip PC 1602-G) And for those who care, the file server AMD 5050e CPU Gigabyte GA-MA78GM 2x 1GB OCZ DDR2 120GB 7200rpm 2.5" SATA System drive 3ware 9698SA-8I RAID card Pinnicle 3010ix TV Tuner 3114 Sil PCI SATA card It has the following drives in no raid config: 1x 500GB 4x 1TB 1x 1.5TB 1x 2TB Front: Internal: More to come soon...
Looks good. I would like to get a proper home network sometime but then again I don't really need it!
Will definitely watch this one, networking is something I really need to get a little more knowledgeable on, also love any builds involving racks
Wont have a rack just yet, the file server case (20 bay xcase) is like £400 :O Pretty cheap considering each 5 bay SATA hot swap thing cost me £99!! but still, got better things to be spending money on at the moment One more image, my Linksys W320N wireless N router. Only running 2.4ghz but still good enough. I have have my old laptop connected at 300mbps though this, but can only get 65mbps now which is a bit dissapointing. sorry about the quality, iphone photo!
And it being rotated the wrong way round... it dosent appear like that on my computer before uploading!
Got my MiniITX board for the pfSense firewall today. During install its consuming 30w of power. Little high but guessing at idle it should go down a little. Epia ML8000 Motherboard 128MB RAM (upgrading to 512MB later when I find it) 1GB CF connected via IDE 80w MiniITX silent PSU The current mess !
Very interesting. May I ask what brand those hot swappable bays are in the desktop? Friend of mine has been looking into NAS boxes or external storage devices for his pc and those seem like they would work well.
That is exactly what caught my eye as well, I too would like to know where to get those drive cages from. Thanks
Sorry, could not wait, I did some searching and tracked it dowm, could not wait .... ICYBOX IB-555SSK 5 Bay 3.5" SATA Hard Drive Enclosure Very awesome choice, once again NRY.
