Cool OK, i'm a recent Mac convert. It's all very exciting, but i've been having some trouble spotting other computers on my little (12 user) network. Only yesterday i was able to connect to my secure vista share and move across some films etc. Turn on tonight and I can't see anything, there's not even a networking icon on my home drive thingy. some background to save the questions: it's a macbook on leopard, connected wirelessly to my router. the desktop is on vista and is wired in. macbook - fev-mac pc - fev-vista along with fev-serve and fev-xp and it can't see any of them. Or any of my house chums
From my knowledge Mac's don't have any advance networking support like Windows does. If I was you, I would get a good wireless router and connect all computers to it. Now about file sharing a Mac with a PC.... don't get your hopes to up, so far I never heard any real success stories.
First things first, go to console and see if you can ping the vista machine, just to determine the basic connection is there. If so try connecting using smb:\\ip address (smb is used to identify the network share as windows based). I do have another trick up my sleeve but I'll have to check my macbook to confirm it.
connect to server worked fine and can now browse the share... thanks! but the question which is bugging me... why has it stopped seeing everyone? no settings changed, the only thing i've installed on to the mac is "missing sync"
It has to auto discover them on the network which takes some time but should eventually. If you need instant access when powered on, use a simple apple script to mount the NAS or shared folder or cmd+k in Finder.
the networking icon from my mac drive has disappeared too.... all too much for me to understand with this new keyboard layout too haha
Mac's can share files with PC just fine, and vice versa. Fev: Does nothing show up in the finder on the left hand side under 'Shared'. Also to go to your local network unselect any apps, then click 'go' at the top, then 'network'
