Woo a new record Where's this come from all of a sudden? Looks like the modding forum is getting a lot of views, has something been /.'d or stumbleupon'd?
smilodon's door hit makeblog the other day, and has since been featured on just about every other site on the interwebs.
RTT complained it was unreachable from his home, but I was sitting refreshing the forums at the same time so I'm not sure what happened. That said, I've been working in the engine all evening, so I would've noticed it go down if it had gone down properly.
There was a huge traffic spike for about 10 minutes or so which may have caused a queue of http requests and hence a slowness that might appear as though it was down.
Per my question in the Spore preview thread - "Just out of curiosity... how many times have you guys been dugg twice and slashdotted at least once in a day? This article [Spore preview] showed up on both (and I'm sure on plenty of gaming blogs), plus an old project log where someone modded their apartment door to have a window etching hit the front page too. " Site must have been unavailable for a very brief time as someone was posting a coral cache link in the Spore digg coments (and a couple of the Bit admins dugg the comment), but I never noticed even a slowness. Anyways, that's just awesome, from pretty much every perspective. Servers didn't explode (though it sounds as if they sputtered a bit), probably a bunch of new visitors that'll keep coming back and thereby inadvertently fund the site, it's an awesome article (and awesome project log for that matter), etc. What kind of hardware is powering Bit, anyways?
I think that's the Intel-sponsored gaming rig. Last I was aware, Tim had a small rack of servers just for testing.
Well the servers aren't all that powerful. We have 2 webservers and one database server, all of which are dual core xeons with a measly 2GB of memory -- no clever raid setup either. All 3 are at least 3 years old now, it's about time we upgraded really The main site, shopping and banner delivery system runs on one server whilst the forums runs the other. The database server also doubles as a memcache server.
if they can stand up to a double-digging, i wouldn't think you really need to worry about upgrading. other than for e-peen value of couse and who's elmo?
Look at the ratio though. On some other big UK forums you'll see numbers like the ones bit-tech is getting, but it'll be maybe 500 members online, 100 guests. Bit-tech is 100 members, 500 guests. We need to get some of the guests to join! Fresh contributing blood an' all that.
some1 asked for fresh blood? anyway, i noticed the smilodon spike too, just look at the number of pageviews he's getting!
