First impressions of the new bigadv project 2685 are that it would seem to rock. Getting a tpf of 23.5 mins which gives a ppd of almost 54K on a 980X @ 4GHz. This is an improvement of 20K on 2684 and almost makes tolerable all the 6701/2s we're having to plough through.

No HFM error = happy bunny :D

How does SMP work on a 12-thread CPU? Do you just run one program and it uses all 12 or do you have to split it into 3 programs?

(Cries and wishes he has a 980X for folding)

One instance can use all 12.

The 980X is power efficient but hardly cost effective on purchase price. The purchases were the kind of rash thing I do before the Chimp Challenge each year  Waiting and then using the money towards a dual Westmere rig would probably have been slightly more rational.

Curious to see how project 2685 will do on somewhat more standard i7 rigs such as the 920.

What would you spend on a decent folding rig then mate? I'm in the market for another and wanted to build it with a decent folding setup in mind. Specs/Price would be nice to know from a veteran such as yourself :)

Hard for me to say as I tend to spend more than average and I’ve not looked much at prices recently. Also, it’s hard to tell which way Stanford is going with the points system vis a vis GPU versus CPU.

Guess if I was building a new rig now I might buy a standard i7 (eg 930) for SMP work and then populate the rig with as many GTX460s as could be afforded. As a slightly nutty alternative I might build a dual X5650 rig with a SR-2 and then overclock the nuts off it.

Two thing I wouldn’t skimp on would be the case (eg Antec 902) or the PSU (eg Corsair HX or Enermax Revolution).

Must dash off to work. Good luck with your decision mate.

I'm currently running with advmethods off. Switched back and forth to see if it made a difference when once again struggling to obtain a wu. Left it off as there appeared to be no impact.

    Cheers.

Thought it was a leave off option but after rebuilding 2 rigs with Windows for bigadv I get 2 P2684's

    I have a i7 @2.66MHz with 12Gb of RAM.
I've added parameters of "-smp 8 -verbosity 9 -bigadv".
Any chance I will get a bigadv, or do I need any extra parameters, or is my CPU too slow?

Certainly at 2.66MHz you've no chance :)D), and even at 2.66GHz on a 4 + 4 core i7 will not meet the deadline - you'd need to crank it up to about 3.6 - 3.8GHz AFAIK.

Was a close thing as i was having 4Ghz issues on new board.
    Sorted now and sitting ok.

    2585
    No GPU 29137 ppd - credit 71798
Oh yes.. now that is nice..

    Bigadv Noob Question

When do you normally get the Bigadv points/credit
I've got 8955 showing up, but not 56k as stated in HF

i would of thought i'd well done 10 smp's on passkey by now..

    thanks

They should be credited like a normal update (look at my stats to see how they're credited).
If you've got the 10 A2/A3 SMP's done & your passkey is correct there shouldn't be an issue.

    Thanks for the come back.

It shows up in HF like your HF online, but not EOC stats (even when updated eventually)

is there a way to check out passkey & smps done with key?

If you look at my EOC you'll see the points update as well.

You could ask on the official folding forum & one of the mods there could check it.
