Hi guys , I am building a new machine as an upgrade from my Toshiba satellite pro laptop. I am disabled and so have my machine by my bed side and use it lot. Both for work and play. Budget: £650-800 Main uses of intended build: Gaming and video editing. I intend to do a lot of video work and office based stuff. Also to function as our houses main viewing machine for movies, tv ect. Parts required: Everything Previous build information: Laptop. Monitor resolution: 22’ Samsung 1600x 1050 Storage requirements: A balance between speed and storage. 1Tb Will you be overclocking: No Any motherboard requirements : Nothing out the usual Extra information about desired system: Also looking for a decent and affordable 5.1 setup and to make the machine wireless is a must. Have 8mb broadband and get great signal strength in room. From research I have put together this machine. What is peoples opinions on my choices? Chassis: Antec 300 Three Hundred Case PSU: OCZ Stealth XStream 600W PSU Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 P5 CPU: Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz Socket LGA1156 8MB L3 Cache Memory: Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz Memory Kit Unbuffered CL9 Graphics: HIS HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 Storage: Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Optical: Pioneer 22x DVD±RW This lot comes in at around £660 and I need to pick up a cpu cooler
Looks good, but you don't need a 600W PSU. A Corsair HX450W will be all the power you need, and it's modular for neatness. The Titan Fenrir is an excellent CPU cooler, though if you're not overclocking it may be overkill. Out of interest, is there any particular reason you aren't overclocking? Wireless can be handled by an internal wireless PCI card; make it an 802.11n for future-proofing - something like this. With regard to the speakers, what's the budget?
Maybe the Gelid Tranquillo? £22.82 preforms along the lines of the Fenrir. All other low cost air coolers are around this price anyways, so if not then may as well stick to stock cooling. Does a monitor, mouse and keyboard need to fit into the remaining budget?
Hi guys thanks. Will change the PSU for the HX450w. Not really into overclocking at the moment as i need a rock steady system and with my history of overclocking normally get things a bit wobbly and temperamental. Will stick a Titan Fenrir on as the better the cooling the better. Speaker budget is around £75 I am sticking with my samsung 225bw monitor for the time being and have keyboard mouse ect.
if you want soem cheapish 5.1 speakers then why not try the logitech x-540's, theyre supposed to be pretty good and are only about £70 from amazon. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-X-...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1267133250&sr=8-1 if that is out of your budget then you can pick up the x-530's for £50 from amazon also. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-Mu...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1267133250&sr=8-2
Just curious as to why you picked the GA-P55A-UD3 motherboard? I have been reading quite a few reviews of P55 motherboards of late. Haven't seen any on the Gigabyte boards with USB3 support. bit-tech.net are currently favouring the GA-P55M-UD2 which would save you just over £20, and I am tending to lean this way myself currently. I have picked the same case and disk as yourself and the Antec 300 and Spinpoint F3 is sitting in the loft waiting for the board, cpu and memory. The other bits will be recycled from existing machines.
The UD2 really is quite budget. I can understand getting the UD3 just for the full-ATX size (which means the Titan Fenrir and other large coolers won't interfere with the memory slots) and the USB3 support for future proofing. BiT recommends the UD3R for the i7 860 build they specify for the Gamer build, for example.
What operating system will you be running? Is this to be bought as well? Is it 32 or 64 bit? If you are running a 32bit system, you are wasting money buying 4Gb of ram. Your OS will see 2.5Gb at best, as your graphics card has 1Gb already. Also, how much video editting will you be doing? If it's a lot, you might want a second hdd? That can be added later, obviously.
Er, let me guess - you bought taller-than-standard-height memory? And you've got that on a UD3, with a Fenrir? Which clip are you talking about?
the motherboard is a GA P55A-UD3, ATX sized. It isn't an issue about how high the memory is because the memory fan sits on top of it anyway.. it is Corsair Dominator with an Airflow fan. There isn't the remotest chance of fitting a fenrir on this board any other way except with the fan nearest the rear of the case. and facing the wrong way. Having done that I found that the standard socket 1156 fitting clip supplied still fouls the memory by a few mm. In the end I did cut two protusions off the clip, and now it fits but it is quite tight.
It is an issue how high the memory is, as I understand it, because without the height increases the Fenrir would fit just fine. The completely redundant Corsair Airflow (I have the same memory heatspreaders and Airflow fan, incidentally) is part of the problem, as are the heatspreaders on the Corsair memory. It can be done no problem with standard-height memory, I understand - Bit-Tech's testing rig, for example, uses the UD2 (which has the same layout) and the Fenrir without noted issue.
I don't have the side fan installed, [Antec 902] and the fan mount doesn't foul the Fenrir but it is tight and I think if the fan were there, it would foul it. I understand what you say about standard height memory.. to be honest, until I took delivery, I did not realise just how big the Fenrir is. I am surprised never to have seen any comment before anywhere about where it will and won't fit, having a full ATX mobo and a gaming case I wasn't anticipating this! Still, it's in now..
