I still have a gen1 Intel SSD in my machine, 80gb drive, I reckon the same type as mentioned above - I haven't ever done anything to it in the 3 years I have been using it. Jus installed windows, made sure trim was working and that's that. Prior to sticking win 8 on my machine last month, I had windows 7 with only 8gb free ish. I try and keep 10% free but that's that really. If she is worried about free space she should make the volume smaller than the physical space on the disk, then she won't actively have to make sure she is leaving free space there. I wouldn't consider a pc without SSD now, it's just SUCH a bottleneck running everything off mech disks. Edit: further to shirty's response below and just to add a bit more info - I've never even updated the firmware on my disk...
Likewise, I've had a 128GB Crucial M4 as my OS drive since pretty much release, and apart from a couple of non-destructive firmware updates early on (improving speeds and reliability), I've done no maintenance on it. I tend to try and keep it under 100GB but that's more due to storage space OCD then maintenance! Also, I don't know here this myth has come from that the 770 is much more expensive than the R280X. Scan is currently selling 770s between £230 and £375, while the R280X is offered from £230 to £311. Their performance is as near as dammit identical, just as it was when they were the 680 and 7970.
For programs that disregard installation location preference/don't give any options on install, or write loads of crap into %appdata% ... There are these amazing handy little things called junction points, which are kind of like fancy shortcuts. You can use them to move programs after installation without breaking anything. There are some more user friendly utilities for using them like steam mover. Using junctions is always one of best ways to free up space on ssd for things that don't really need to be on there when a hdd location is fine instead.
She's getting the R290X, and an SSD (120GB Crucial M500?). Going to drop the CPU to the 4670. Ah, well obviously shove it on a storage drive. The problem is Sims forces loads of **** onto the C drive, no matter where you install it. Like save files etc from most games. It has everything like custom content etc on the C Drive. :/ Actually just been looking about, I guess I could just move the Documents/Downloads folders in windows to another drive and sims should just install to it automatically? The updated spec now.
240GB SSD should still be well inside the budget, no ? http://www.scan.co.uk/products/240g...ernal-ssd-slim-7mm-500mb-s-read-250mb-s-write +45GBP, +120GB (not GiB, unfortunately) compared to the 120GB model in your list.
Did not see that! With the 100 saving from 290x to 290, we added the 240GB. Ty. Yes Otis, oh lord. ;P Changed. Shame most are out of stock at mo. Added the cheaper MSI one. We prefer look of the windforce/frozr coolers. lol
I have a similar budget (not including case and monitor) and would advise you go for similar to mine for high end gaming. As in; change the processor to i5 piece of piss to oc if she ever fancies trying in the future . change mobo to Asus rog hero board (though tbh I just love this board too much), definitely change the GPUto an R9 290 with and after market cooler looking at 342 for sapphire tri-x at cheapest one MSI just rreleased twin frozebeast at £360 you gain most of the money for the upgrades here ffrom turning i7 to i5
Just read revised version. That MSI board is good. But change the 2tb HDD to 3tb Toshiba HDD. Only cost 15 quid more for an extra 50% storage capacity
Yeah, I like them too, but push up the ££ =[ Thanks Xaine, I looked at your post too. xD BTW Anyone, on the Scan site for mobo i've chosen it shows a totally different looking mobo(and video review is the £140 one) to ones i'm seeing in reviews for that name!? :/ In reviews it is blue and on the site it is the cool Dragone red style. :/ Anyone know whats up there? lol Don't really want the blue, red is the kinda theme :s Can't really push budget up anymore to the £109 MSI G45 just cos of different colour.
Wasnt there a dude on here that had a couple of those MSI Gaming boards and had trouble with them? Fair few posts on MSi forums with no post scenarios as well. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=m...en.msi.com&espv=210&es_sm=93&biw=1331&bih=680 I'd prob play it safe with a tried and tested Asus of Gigabyte personally.
Ahhh shizzy. Able to recommend one up to 90quid? It doesn't need anything fancy. Prefer red or bright orange colours, or just totally bland. Not blues, greens and stuff haha. edit: gigabyte-ga-z87-hd3 < This any good? Nice and understated. I like the position of SATA too. lol
I personally had good experience with ASUS and ASRock. I also have one Ivy Bridge Gigabyte board and it is a lot better than their S1156 and Sandy Bridge boards, those were pathetic; but i don't OC on that board, so not sure how good they are at overclocking. So i would probably go for http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus...raid-pcie-30-(x16)-d-sub-(vga)-dvi-d-hdmi-atx but everyone to their own .
If I had to buy a budget Z87 ATX board at the moment I'd buy this. But for £90 I'd go for this as faugusztin has suggested. Don't personally care for the colours though.
