Hey guys, its got to the stage where my old machine just does not cut the mustard in new games any more. I have held off upgrading for a long time, but i feel with the AMD/ATi delays, now maybe the right time, now being over the Easter holidays . Here is what i am thinking of so far: I already have a case, large hard drive and dvdrw drive from my current computer. The TFT i am using at the moment has a resolution of 1280x1024 so an 8800GS could be overkill, but i want a fair bit of future proofing, especially with directx10 around the corner. The only concern i have at the moment is the size of the card and my case, which is a Lian-Li PC7B PLUS2, will it have enough clearance? I am also wondering if it would be possible to have 2 sets of the ram for 4GB of memory? or would having 4 sticks of ram have an effect on performance, like it used to force 2T? Is it necessary to have ram this fast? i chose it primarily because of its higher voltage and reasonably tight timings, suggesting it has decent chips on it? I am looking to do a bit of overclocking, but nothing too major! (might get a scythe ninja if i can find one) Thanks for your time guys Hugh
be careful with vista at the moment matey... im not sure about games running on it at the moment... people have had a lot of trouble with older games and some newer too... having said that, you probably know the pitfalls of using a brand new os so i wont preach... looks like a nice build tho... what about a 8800 gtx... really compliment your system with one of those rather than the gts... having said they are not bad cards by any margin! good luck matey
The differencies in memories come obvious at high overclocks only, a "bit of" might not need high end chips and sticks. Those seem to go pretty nicely along the line of the other parts though... Maybe some memory expert will tell you. Other than that the setup looks damn nice, with a HX620 even bbq of doom wont have to reply ;P
thank you for your replies so far, as for an 8800GTX, i was hoping to stick to a budget of around £1000 as my student loan is around that figure In regards to the ram, this is what i am wondering about, i have spent many hours overclocking my Athlon XP system, which is still my main system today, however i have no real experience of Intel Chipsets, and overclocking seems quite different. I have read Highlander's FAQ's and whilst very useful, i could not decide on ram.
