I'm guessing your not fortunate enough to try you CPU in his machine?

That will answer the difference :)

    no :(

trying to find a cheap repair guy or friend with an lga1156 board who'll help me out. i phoned pc world for a laugh who said they'd charge me £50 to check the cpu for me. What a lovely bunch of reasonably priced guys. When i lived in middlesbrough, there was a pc shop that knew their stuff, and would charge £8 for a full diagnosis... One of the few things i miss about middlesbrough!

There's local shops like that wherever you go. You just need to try a different CPU in it, or your CPU in a different board.

You'll know the difference straight away then, and you could set about RMA'ing it.

You could always return both to your e-tailer after explaining your situation. Scan for example charge a testing fee of £15 if they find the good you sent them is non faulty, but it's still cheaper than 50 quid!

Personally that's probably the best option. Where did you get it from?

That's a pretty good idea actually, yea I got it from scan. It'd be pretty nice if I found it was jar the CPU tho so I didn't have to pull the motherboard out of the case

Yeah I know what you mean.

On my build so far I've had to RMA the mobo, 1 of the graphics card and now the PSU. I'm sick to death of the sight of the inside of my PC now, but think of it like whats a few weeks fuss for all the years of love it will give you

But yeah Scan are ace. They might not wanna take it, if you already aware one of them's not faulty. When I had two sets of RAM I had to know exactly what set was wrong before they would take it back. But make it very clear to them you have no way of testing, and you'll happily pay their testing fee etc. Best bit is when they do find what's wrong they can send you a new one straight away.

Scan are ok, Though I've had some pretty bad experiences with them and rma's, But nothing compared to overcockers, Dont forget postage.

Yea I've mostly had a good time with scan, but to be honest, I haven't rma'd them too much. I buy crucial ram which breaks every so often, but I keep going back cus their customer service is so good.

Is it quite common for components to be dead out of the box? As long as I havnt broken it, god forbid... I think I'd cry if they refused to rma my £160 CPU. I keep thinking I ahud have ticked that £10 installation insurance box

I can't remember exactly as it was back in December, but I think there was a power light on the motherboard and when I pressed the power button the CPU fan spun up briefly and then nothing.

You'll always find Scan more expensive than other e-tailers. But in my eyes, you'll always find it worth it :)

And no, I'm not getting sponsorship from these posts :)

Your not out of the woods yet too.

While theyv'e agreed to take and test both for free, they might yet find the CPU had it's pins bent when you put it in. Did you take out the optional ScanSure insurance when you bought the goods?

No I didn't, I wish I did. I'll be devastated if it's my fault, but I really don't think I did anything to it. I've got my fingers crossed. Definately taking out insurance next time

yay! RMA completed, stuffs getting shipped back to me, they didn't say what was broken, although presumably they will just send me back the not broken one in the same packaging i sent them, so the one thats open is the one that was working... maybe. or maybe they were both broken, I'll report back with my findings...

gooed to know i'm not completely incompetent and mangled my componenets tho!etely incompetent and mangled my componenets tho!

well it was the motherboard, got a new motherboard, same cpu, it's all up and running now. cheers for the help everyone.

seeing as I'm here, I'm gunna make a new topic in the software section, but any idea why windows 7 won't install/open things? some things i click on, it acts like its doing it, but then nothing happens. The internet explorer icon that is on the taskbar when you install does the same thing.

if i look in processes, theyre're all there running, but nothing comes up. I was trying to install firefox, and the setup does the exact same thing, no idea why
