    Hello,

I am new here and I have decided to build a new computer, below are a list of the main components I am thinking of buying. What are your opinions and can I improve the system in anyway?

I was thinking about building the computer around the Q6600, but have decided to look to the future in building around the core i7, is this a good idea? Also are there going to be new CPU's released in a few months time that can better and possibly be cheaper that the i7?

    Thanks for your time...

    Antec Three Hundred case
    Corsair 650W TX SERIES PSU
    Intel i7 920
    Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
    Corsair Dominator DDR3 3GB (3x1GB)
    Radeon HD 4870 1GB

That looks good to me, but I'd go with 6Gb of RAM. I really don't think 3 is enough these days.

I'd go with i7 now, i5 is due in a couple of months I believe, but it won't be as fast (as its a mainstream product). :)

What is the system for? 3GB is going to plenty, you can always wait another 12 months until price drops and you can get another 3gb much cheaper. I guess it all depends what you're using it for though. PERSONALLY I haven't yet seen the compelling argument for core i7 as a desktop processor - it's just far too powerful for anything you can currently use it for. It would probably be cheaper (although maybe not now so much) getting a solid core2 build and when you need the extra power, upgrading as the i7 platform will have come down in price. I have a first gen core2duo and I still don't suffer bottlenecks when gaming and the like, the only differences beng when it's doing number crunching like opening archive files and the like.

That's my 2p anyway, it would be worth looking at all the options depending on what you want it to do. Personally if I didn't game I'd probably get a chunky laptop with a second monitor :p just for the low power usage, greater portability and less clutter with a million and one different devices.

If he's going to upgrade to a Core i7 setup later and buy Core 2 now, why not just go i7 now? The only stuff that'll come out are newer processors that are slightly faster (which, if this'll be overclocked, won't matter anyway). It will work out more expensive overall.

It looks good, but could you tell us more about the planned usage of the system?

Id go with 6gb, but with the speed of the i7 platform it doesnt have to be dominator.
You wont notice the difference at all.

^ Until you run out of memory. I've managed to get up to 5Gb of memory usage just playing games and doing a few other bits. I seriously think 3Gb isn't enough these days.

Its worth spending a little more now and then you won't have to later on.
