Ok, I'm having some issues in vista and with my new computer. I have the following: Motherboard: Asus P5K-E/Wi-fi-AP Processor: Q6600 Graphics: 8800GTS OC2 Using onboard sound. Windows Vista Noting overclocked. Firstly, temperature issues: My Motherboard temperature is higher than my CPU temp... what would cause this?! If i look at the core cpu temps, they're more in line with the motherboard temp, but the cpu general temp is lower. This is both in the bios and in windows. Secondly, sound issues. Previously, in XP, when I played a video file or mp3 in media player, or itunes or anything, it would play in 4 of my 5 speakers. Now, i've just got a new computer with Vista on it, and they only come out of two. All 5 speakers work in control panel, and i've tested them in bioshock and the surround is working in that too. It's driving me nuts! In a slightly related issue, I cannot get my computer to recognise my microphone. I've plugged it in both the front and back panels, and it will not get any sound from it. I've tried two different mic's, and they both work through my USB sound adaptor that came with one of the (a headset). Also tried the mic's in the line in, and they dont work there either... Anyone got any help with any of these problems?! Thanks!
Tried tinkering in the sound options? Got the latest sound drivers installed? It might be worth getting them from the manufacturers website rather than the ones that Vista installs automatically.
Yeah, tried tinkering with everyting in sound options. As for vista sound drivers - i've never tried them - installed the latest from the website immediately. I'm acutally considering uninstalling them and seeing whether Vista can do a better job...
This is nothing to worry about and expected, looking at my temps the cpu sits at 24c yet the mobo sits at around 36c. As for your sound issues, welcome to Vista!!!!!!! Your not going to get all 4 speakers working the way you wish. This has been well documented across the net with this issue. Basicly its due to the fact that vista removed the audio HAL and a difference between DirectSound and DirectSound3D (will try find more info) now things are routed differently. So the only time your get all channels working is by playing a DVD and using the digital output to your speakers if they support digital inputs of cause. EDIT: creative have made a work around for this called "ALchemy" and Soundmax have worked with Asus to creatie a similair tool called "blackhawk" this makes a few improvements like regaining hardware audio acceleration, and EAX effects, but multiple channels is still missing.
Just a thought, if your running Vista 32bit then you could try out the ASIO 4 all drivers, then use a media program that supports the use of ASIO, such as Winamp, Foobar. This will effectivly bypass the Microsoft audio platform. Found this document which explains and displays in full the difference in the audio engines for Vista and XP.
I've just downloaded that asio thing - can you please explain to me what I'm supposed to do with it now that I have it?!?! (Thanks for the help!)
Check this article out, explains the setup steps for winamp and foobar, also has link to the plugins required. Hope this helps.
Thanks Incidentally, i've partially solved my mic problem. If i turn the auto detection of what's in where off (its called AudioESP), then the mic doesnt work at all. If i turn it on (which means that i get some annoying pop-ups every time i stick something in) then it works fine. Random. I've also managed to get the surround woking to a degree. I flicked some random option, and now it works but it's so quiet and tinny, its pointless! What i dont understand is why it works fine in Bioshock, but not in anything else. Just got the HL2 Orange Box, and the surround is the same as what i described in windows...
If i recall Bioshock uses the OpenAL audio engine, where as HL2 uses DirectSound (3D)? OpenAL is like ASIO in some respects in that it bypasses the microsoft audio platform.
Not 100% correctly no, there is a work around that I found this morning. Will be trying this out when I get home this eve, would hope it to work with BlackHawk as well as alchemy, will let you know once tested.
Oooh - will try that later Thanks so much for your help on this mate! Slightly new matter, but i wish it was possible to plug my headphones in the back of my computer (instead of the front panel) and leave them there... keeps telling me i've stuck them in the wrong hole... (story of my life )
Well ive only just this second got home, am just about to try it, but BlackHawk is basicly a ripoff of the creative alchmey. There does not appear to be a dsound.ini with blackhawk, and im unable to edit the .dll, was a long shot, but worth a try, guess will just have to wait for better support.
Yeah, i took a look and couldnt find a suitable dll. Nevermind. At least there is *something* coming out of all my speakers now, even if it's far from perfect!
I was having a think about this - is there any way that somebody could create the missing audiolayer thing for XP so that it could be implemented manually? Or does it need to be in the OS? Or even, some workaround to get OpenAL working with all games?
