Hello all. Now my only real experience with Apple is that of my iPod and associated accessories - recently a jerk yanked at my iPod remote cord to get my attention at a train station...needless to say he damaged the wire. So fast forward a few weeks, and I was looking at the possibility of making myself a front panel control board for my PC using standard glass 'coated' in gallium on the underside, to create a reflective and conductive surface to which some rudimentry circuitry could be fashioned to create a switch... ...fast forward a little more to a few hours ago and a long train journey. I dragged out my pen and paper, and began drawing my front panel trying to settle on a design that I liked asthetically, and something made me think about using the same technique to make a 'solid state' ipod remote - thus instead of buttons, a small layer of glass (probably microscope slide glass) with the necessary symbols of the iPod remote done in gallium and salvaging the internal circuitry from my current remote to create a new one. Just wondering if anyone had actually made a custom remote for their iPod, and mores the point if anyone had considered a similar approach... Anybody?
Hi I don't understand fully all the words you are saying. But I think I get that you want to make your own custume remote for the iPod. And thats a great idea! I've used the iPod remote for a while and its a great little remote. Has everything it needs for me, its small, looks good and is pretty solid. Now I haven't seen anybody "mod" them yet. But I assume at least 1 person did this already. So maybe try a google-search for this. I don't think it will be that hard. The iPod remote connecor has like 4 extra electronical contacts and the pressing of a button is most likely just a connection of a few of those wires. I do want to point out that you should use the connector of the apple remote. For 2 reasons. 1 I don't think there is any other way of getting the connection. 2 the headphone connector is also different on the remote then on the headphones. Good luck, and do post pictures and circuitary! If you have a broken iPod remote laying around, you coul use the wire/connector for your remote and open it up to see the circuitary. L ::edit:: Just did a google search and didn't find anything, but only tried for 2 minutes. lol. But if your Apple remote is damaged, you might get a new one. I got my remote with my iPod... and I just filled in the form at the site.. and 2 days later I had a new remote in my mail, no questions asked. Great service ! But it might be different if you bought it seperatly from the iPod. Good luck And do try to google for people that did the same. L
I wouldnt use glass, something like polycarbonate would be better as the microscope slides are rather fragile. also see if you can put the control circuit in your pocket so all you see is a clear bit of glass with a few etched symbols. I wonder if you could get enough conductivity on your skin to make the connection on the panel, I dont see why not, but you might need to amp the signal to the remote.
