Just installed the new Detonator drivers and the score went from 10652 to 11543. I overclocked the vid card to stock 4600 speed and it went up to 12182. WOOHOO!!!!! I always hoped to break 11k but NEVER thought I could break 12K. Now I gotta wait and see how far I can up the FSB since I re-enabled the onboard sound and try this again to see how high I can get it. :D :D :D :D :D

I, too, installed the new 40.41 drivers and got a 600 point increase in my 3dmark score, but the graphics in the actual games I play Suck! I'm going back to the 29.42 drivers. They seem to have the best speed/detail level ratio so far on my PC....

I haven't noticed any decrease in the detail of graphics in games like Wolfenstein and Half-life. And yes, n0fear, they really do mean something to some of us. No sarcastic remarks please.

They should do, it's a benchmark. Stop trolling.

i don't see the big deal, would u rather get 500,000,000 in 3dmark, or have ur games run at optimal frames per second/detail constantly?

To be honest, I agree that the best benchmark for graphics is if the games look ok to the person playing them..

However some people like a good indicator of how well their kit is performing, so that's no reason for you to be pointlessly unhelpful.

My games are running VERY well and look absolutely fantastic. I couldn't be happier with the way it is performing and having a high 3D Mark score just makes it better. Why be negative about it??? If you have nothing constructive to say, don't say anything.

    Thanks :: kna :::cooldude:

3dmark is an interesting benchmark, in that it is a hybrid application and synthetic benchmark. The game demos give real-world performance indicators and the synthetic tests show what the graphics hardware is capable of in isolation to the rest of the machine.

An example is that a friend of mine has a GF4 Ti4200 in his Duron 800 machine. He gets 8000 and something 3dmarks, while I get 7521. However, using the madonion compare system online, my system consistently gives higher framerates in the game demo tests, while his outperforms mine in the synthetic tests. The overall result being that yes, a GF4ti4200 is more powerful than a GF3, but with the much stronger machine backing up the GF3, it achieves better real-world performance.

The final 3dmark numbers don't show this however, because the synthetic tests are weighted equally to the application tests.

However, 3d mark is a reasonable way of testing your performance, and is certainly a VERY good way to determine differences with drivers. My own experience with 40.41 was that the control panel extension no longer worked, I couldn't overclock the card that way or through NVmax, and 3dmark crashed halfway through, so I returned to 30.82, which is a great deal more stable for me. It is also a way of determining problems with DX installations, etc. So while the numbers may not necessarily mean a lot, and saying "oh, I get more 3d marks so my machine is better" isn't necessarily true, 3d mark certainly does have its uses and this thread about the difference introduced by different drivers is very indicative of one of them.

The 40.41s are not compatible with previous det (ie you cant simply install over previous dets)
You need to go into control panel/add remove progs and uninstall previous dets.
Do a reboot, dont allow windows to install graphics drivers.
Find the new dets (40.41_winxp.exe) and run.

You should now have the control panel available

    I wasn't aware of that....I'll give it another go then. I don't think I'll gain much though, since I'm on a GF3.

You might see a decent improvement on the nature test score Isaac, as the new drivers seem much better optimized for all the pixel shading effects such as those on the nature test. My Gf3 fps in the nature test jumped up to around 60 from 42 when I tried the new drivers on my old Ti200. With this Ti4600, and the new drivers, I can get about 90fps, as opposed to about 70 with older driver releases.

    :)

Actually, I ended up with lower framerates since I can not overclock my card under 40.41. Got it all working, on third install...the second decided not to give me any options between 1600x900 and 1920x1080 (it went mental basically).....from my previous high of 7521, I'm down to 6548.

However, I've got to reinstall the whole bang-shoot soon when my new hard disk turns up, so it's not to critical right now...can someone tell me how to get clock speed adjustments under 40.41?

Use this version of coolbits http://www.yodasarmpit.co.uk/Downloads/coolbits.reg works for me.

It should enable a new tab "clock frequencies"

ok, up to 7270 at 220/480. Coolbits won't let me go beyond 220 on the core, but I know it runs fine at 235, but 240 is a little dodgy (it runs, but artefacts appear). I can't be bothered messing around with bart, homer, marge and krusty to change the limits allowed (I did this once before). I'll track down a utility to do it. NVmax isn't compatible with 40.41....does anyone have a util that will do similar to nvmax but which is compatible?

That .reg thing didn't work for me, but the info in it is correct. Just copy it manually into the registry.

I used rivatuner to take my card further than coolbits would allow

    download from here http://www.guru3d.com/rivatuner/

Remember just like coolbits its only for nVIDIA cards
