Im going to be in the process of looking for a new dvd player and then a tv. i can wait for tv for now, my dvd player has started to not play most of my discs. My thoughts are either..

    a) standard dvd player
    b) blu-ray player

I have had a brief look and i would like to get something that i will not need to upgrade for years, i have thought of something like LG BX580if i go for bd.

    http://bluray-players.net/lg/lg-bx580-review/

    Thoughts are welcome.

I can see that you've already made some decisions and and narrowed the list down a bit, but just out of interest, can I ask why you decided to leave the video casette player off your final list of formats to choose from?

    /sarcasm :hehe:

Seriously though, aren't they all much of a muchness these days anyway? As far as DVD players go, unless you buy it from Tesco and it has technicks written on it you can't go wrong. I've yet to buy a bluray player for myself and start my BD collection, but the LG one you linked to looks spot on and seems a decent price too. I think when I do go all blu, I'll do it by adding a BD drive to the media center rather than buying a standalone player.

er... ps3? I use mine for BD playback and it's great. Use a harmony remote and the harmony bluetooth adapter to make it all tie into my system, so it's pretty seamless.

(also: BD on PC - total fail right now. seriously, save your money. the software landscape for BD on HTPCs is TERRIBLE)

I know, but thanks for the tip nyway. It won't be hppening any time soon Fod, don't worry! Any spare income I have at the moment is being spent on much more important things than high definition films ;)

Besides, there are over 100 bluray titles on my streaming media server at the moment :worried:

I just made the jump to HD, and the first purchase I made was a PS3. For me, it serves 3 purposes:
    1. Blu-ray, DVD, and CD player
    2. Gaming system. Although I'm not much of a gamer, there are a few games that I enjoy. Some of them, such as the Lego games, don't really need to be on PC.
    3. Media server. My next step will be to rip all of my daughter's DVDs and put the video files on the PS3. This way we can fire up a movie at any time, and we don't have to sit through the excruciating ads and menu screens that are typical of a certain studio *coughdisneycough*

I managed to find a package deal that included a 120GB PS3 Slim, 3 movies, 1 game, and the PS3 remote.

It may not fit with your needs, but I have found that the PS3 has suited me quite nicely.

    +1

Great for DVDs, CDs and iPlayer catchups as well.

I too have a Harmony remote, therefore I am intreagued by your theory and wish to subscribe to your newsletter... (tell me more!) :)

Blu-Ray player if you don't need all the extras a PS3 offers. Simple really. I already have a 360 so I stumped for a nice BD player and it's lovely :)

Have a look for one of the original PS3s, yes the slim is slim, but I do enjoy the look of a George Foreman grill next to my PC...

And I know for a fact you can change the storage on the thicker PS3s, not sure if you can on the slim. Means you can get a massive video/music/porn collection on your PS3, accessible straight away.

Plus it gives you the whole gaming thing as well as your much needed DVDs :)

A PS3. I know it sounds expensive, but.
    It is:-

    A Blu-ray player.

    A good dvd upscaler.

A good media streaming client (on your local network or iPlayer and the like).

i love my ps3 for BR and DVD playback as well, only downside that really pisses me off with it is that it ISNT multiregional.

    /me looks at the 60% of R1 dvd's on his shelf :(

You can indeed swap out the hard drive on a PS3 Slim.

Absolute +1 on that. My housemate and I did a straight comparison between Casino Royale's opening scene on dvd and BD and the dvd more than held it's own (on a 46" tv) - the main reason I have yet to buy a single BD.

However the Playstation leaves in September (stupid marriage) so I shall soon be in the same position as op. Tbh I may just go for an upscaling dvd player...

Logitech make an electronic doohickey that transmogrifies the IR magic rays given out by the harmony remotes into bluetooth emanations. It works a treat for controlling all functions of the pa3 including power on/off. Recommended. It's called the logitech harmony ps3 adapter, as far as I know.

    Or you could try this...?

    Clicky

We have one, does the business very nicely and it's a tad cheaper.

I have one already - it's OK, but the whole idea of the Harmony is to have one remote to rule them all. It's annoying having to use the BT remote for the PS3 after I've set the rest of the system up with one button on the Harmony.

And you can't turn the system off with the BT remote without having to go back to the dashboard and navigating through the menus. Is an 'off' button that difficult, Sony?

Ah but you can, hold the PS button for a second or two (from anywhere) and you have the option to power off the system. And something else, I can't remember what.

I quite like our array of remotes (four), I can do most things without looking at what I'm holding :D

I don't own any games consoles (I game on the PC) so I bought a BD player recently.

You can get a decent one for around £100 now.
