Graphics New Graphics Card - Options?

    Ok, but I'm assuming the performance boost for the £120 ish it'd cost would be well worth it?

    yeah in most cases the scaling is very good, around 90% improvement.

    Nvidia drivers tend to be very good, unfortunately due to them having to be tested on their entire range of cards by them and Microsoft's whql labs they can take a while to be released, so you sometimes have to wait a while for the official SLI profiles to be released.

    Sometimes you can find workarounds on the internet though.

    May I ask what res you are running? When you say stutter, can you be certain its a v ram issue? If you SLI'd the 560ti do you think you would still get stutter?

    The performance difference on the bit tech guide showed no difference with having extra v ram at both 1680 and 1920. So if you are indeed running at 1680 then you should have extra memory in the tank for a more demanding level ( I haven't played the single player much so I can't say.)

    The developers recommended 1.5GB for 1920x1080 with everything on ultra so yeah running at at 1680x1050 will definitely reduce the memory requirements, hence why I only get occasional stutter.

    As for SLI I used to have 2 512MB 9800GTX+s and I found the memory was the limiting factor for some games like dragon age 2, GTA4, Crysis so they would be jerky at certain points. The cards themselves were powerful enough to handle the games but if i'd had the 1GB GTS250 based on the same chip it would have been smoother.

    One thing I did find with SLI is that anisotropic filtering and AA took much less of a hit percentage wise when enabled.

    Yeah I normally use that comparison but I find it has 2 issues.

    1. It's often old or poorly optomised games like battlefront.
    2. It also does not contain comparisons for alot of the 2 gig cards, to see how they compare to their 1 gig counterparts.

    So the general consensus is either a 448 core 1.3 gig 560ti or a 384 core 2 gig 560ti? How can I know which of those will offer the best overal performance?

    @OP - Other option is to wait until you are actually buying the monitor. If it is sufficiently later in the year you may well find the new kepler cards released and prices dropping on the current range offering you far better bang for buck.

    The 448 core will definitely give better performance although the 384 can be overclocked to almost match it. The other advantage it has is the extra 280MB vram.

    Also if you do decide to go SLI then as the 448's are limited editions you may have more difficulty finding a matching card.

    The 384's are generally considered better value for money as the 448's are so close to the 570's in price, which again will give a bit more performance.

    Yeah the anandtech is a bit dated but still gives a fairly reasonable general comparison.

    The new GFX card megatest in CPC swears by the 560ti 384 core version and it got a premium grade.. I am uncertain as the 448 looks like the stronger choice depending at what price you can get it.

    Honestly tho, I wouldn't buy a new card now as your 460 is still a decent performer @ 1680 and a full 28nm range are due out in the next couple of months (Less than that from AMD).

    If you are desperate I would SLI the 460, that for me is the glaringly best option considering the performance increase for the price.

    God this is a hard decision, a poor time to be looking at a new card! Judging by the bf3 guide posted above, a 560ti would give the same frame rates as my 460, but instead of high settings I would be be using ultra.

    Still cant decide between the 1 gig for immediate bang for buck, the 2 gig for potential future proofing or the 1.3 448 core for a pricey but more immediate increase.

    Also, I have looked at the below link, but when I called e-buyer they said it did not actually include a copy of bf3! How can they advertise a bf3 branded version but not provide it, surely this is false advertising?

    You'll get a coupon to download the game for free.

    Not sure what prices are like, but so far the 570 has been better value than the 448 core 560TI and they tend to be nearly the same price.

    Yeah I get that it's a code, but both companies were saying they had ran out, which in the case of the ASus bf3 branded bundle I could not see how they can advertise it hat way.

    As for the 570, they start at 260 quid, where as u can have a 448 core 560ti for 220 quid.

    Went for the GTX 560ti Direct CU2 TOP in the end. £190 quid, a free copy of BF3 that I can give to a friend (who has a HD6970 but was going to get BF3 on the 360!!!).

    Basically, I sent my card back to the retailer due to these random driver stop errors, which interestingly they said are the most common reason for returned GPUs. They will either find it faulty and issue a part refund (meaning my upgrade only cost me about 60 quid in new money) or they won't find fault with it and return it to me, in which case I will just e-bay the 460, maybe getting a 100 quid, making my new money cost about 90 quid. Not bad really.

    Basically I was impatient and didn’t want to be without it for too long ;)

    I was really tempted to get a 448 cored 560ti but it would have been another 30-40 quid. I was also really tempted to go the SLI option, but it was bad timing, as I would have had to order 2 new 460s, but if no fault is found with mine, then I’d have ended up with 3!! I could have waited I know but I think my end solution was a reasonable compromise. It still gives me the option to go SLI at a later date, when I get a new monitor.

    Now I will have a working machine, I can go back to sorting out my CPU over clock problems.

    Appreciate all the advice from you helpful lot :)

    Just installed it, booted up ok. I assume the best practive would be to unistall and then re-install the drivers from scratch or does it not really make a difference?
