Okay so I'm on the rocks. This is probably my 4th forum. Why am I jumping around? Techies are clinical and egotistical way too often. Or in other words, the forum was full of people who are just snotty. I literally had the book thrown at my for asking why linux wasn't on netbooks on the tektips forum ( because it was personal, thus it was .. against the charter...). I have faith, that the modder sites are full of happy people with lives and personalities =). Warn me now if you are all ass hats =P So I have a question. Just to get a feel for the community. (I swear, I do not see a "charter" here). It's actually a big issue. My mom... wants to buy a mac.. How can I convince her not to? Some guy on an airplane showed her an Ipad... I don't think the droid pads will be out soon enough to save her! Please, think if it was your own mother! (mac fans.. don't be offended.. but your on a mod site. Modders don't buy premade macs!.)
Just let her buy a Mac - they're what people want, so just live with it. p.s. Welcome, I don't think we have a "Charter" but a read of the FAQ and rules would be great.
But but but I can't let her do it! I don't know if it's just programmers pride... or the idea of her overpaying for gloss. (she compared it to her 6 year old 1.5k laptop) Hmm so far you all haven't posted a condescending link, and the mod has a hypno toad. I think were off to a good start..
Just give up - she wants something a) pretty b)easy to use. Voila, a Mac is both of those. If she's prepared to pay then just let it be done and buy yourself something Linux to counter-balance it.
ask here why she wants to buy a mac. i mean there has to be a reason she wants a mac over a PC you need to find that out to tackly the problem at hand once you know why she wants it show here you can do it better with the PC lol
Why would you want to convince her not to? When anyone asks me what to buy, I ask them if they have any interest/skill with computers. If the answer is no, I recommend a Mac. If the answer is yes, I recommend a PC. Simple. "Mothers" usually fall into the non-tech savvy category, and would usually end up messing a PC up by doing stuff they don't understand, or getting it infected with so much malware it grinds to a halt. Personally, I hate Macs... but for someone who just wants a computer to surf, e-mail, general use and has no expertise whatsoever... I recommend a Mac every time, especially if it;s family, otherwise your life will suddenly become very busy being free IT support all the time. Remember, recommending what YOU would want isn't doing her any favours. It's not for you... it's for her. Seriously... wouldn't a Mac be better for someone like your Mother?
If it was my own mother I would encourage her to buy the Mac, that way I could send her to the 'geniuses' at the Apple store every time she can't figure out how to open her e-mails or copy a file to a USB stick. P.S. - enjoy your stay Mr. New Guy. If we had a charter this would probably be the closest thing to it.
Yeah actually I'm going to my my asus G2 after I come up with a cool concept... Though right now I'm modding my Starcraft 2 Raynor Dog tag USB. Though I've come across a hitch because they use a custom design ( go figure) for the LEDs. ALso their board is a weird shape. I'm doing to have to do some research on where I can get the right dimensions for that. I'm afraid I'm going to have to add a battery for the dog tag light. That's not too bad, except it will be on 24/7 (or I can add a switch... but I want to keep it minimal...) .. err sorry got on a tangent. Yes, a case mod for a laptop. Though I have too many irons in the fire for now. The list of mods. Well first I need to finish designing the parts for my new line of custom modder parts, which I'm going to produce and try to sell. After that, a reprap 3d printer, and the 3d printer will let me make the parts I need for my next by hand computer case. (which is also why I'm designing the custom modder parts). This time I'll go to a metal, instead of my favorite 1/4th inch poly carbonate... I'm also tempted to mod my eee. Though all the mods I think of, would annoy my instructors ( ie leds, etc) and would make it unusable. The EEE has very little working room, so it's hard to add anything but vents and lights.. Now as far as my mom goes, yeah shes pretty tech unsavy.. though at the same time shes a hard core user. Can program HTML, and has half a comp sci degree... yet can't manage her drivers. I had a professor. First day, pulled out a mac ( I go oh no... this is comp sci course) .. then spend 10 minutes trying to figure out the head phone jack. That was a very long and terrible semester.
Just to throw in my 2 pence on the Mac =/= modder thing. Been on the forums for 9 years now (woah) and in that time I've modified a good amount of stuff and had more than my fair share of Dremel and/or 7,000 RPM fan blade related injuries. I think the reason I modded was to get hardware that I truly loved the aesthetics of. Pure delicious industrial design. Then I fell in love with a 12" PowerBook and realised I could never do better than that regardless. Since then I personally haven't been able to figure why anyone would put up with Windows when OS X felt so much more intuitive and stable to me but to each their own! And in that time I have now taken apart and repaired more Macs than you can shake a stick at! And gosh damn it, it is bloody fun. Most of them are just a joy to work on. Some are a real challenge too. But generally they all do require an awful lot of technical knowledge to work on. Things like component isolation on a PC is a piece of cake, it becomes a whole new ball game on a computer so intricately designed inside. Which is all the more fun Either way, welcome aboard and let your mom splurge and buy a Mac if she wants one! Haha.
Got a MacBook 13" unibody, love it to bits - great design, nice features. Not such a fan of OSX but that might be more to do with my resentment of the generally Fisher-Price approach it takes to everything complex. But seriously, after the horror of doing work for three generations of my family, I'm recommending Macs left, right, and centre. It's not my money they're spending, it's theirs, and none of them game or doing anything that requires high-end hardware. The amount of time saved in I-can't-believe-you-just-asked-me-something-that-retarded silences in phone calls alone is astronomical.
Welcome to bit-tech! As far as online communities go, I think you'll find this is one of the friendliest you'll come across
Not true, I'm an asshole and I bite Welcome on the forum. My parents also wanted a mac 8 months ago and I convinced them to get a Vaio instead. They don't regret it at all and they really love their laptop. I, however, think I should have let them buy a macbook because I really need to learn how OSX work
LIAR! This is blasphemy! I happen to know you're one of the most friendly and active members on this forum
not that this banter isn't great fun but to get this thread back on track. Here is my opinion on the OP post. if all your mom is going to do is surf the net, look at pictures, check email, etc. any os will do her fine (windows, linux, osx). i would go with whatever you will end up supporting (because this will happen, trust me). Also welcome to the forums and unless your in the serious forum don't take any personal shots to personally as it's all in good fun.
Werd. It took my mum about 5 years to get competent with PCs and it made her frustrated and angry every step of the way. They're not user-friendly, however much they may feel it to the well-acquainted
tell her she won't get those mother/son bonding moments when you need to teach her or fix her computer. Instead she can bond with the Apple Store idiots. Or just compare Apple to a cult. It shockingly easy.
Welcome to the forums, it's definitely my favorite forum in the 'nets, and seeing how my opinion is the absolute truth, you should like it as well And about macs and mothers.. I'd just tell mine that I won't be able to help her with ANY problems if she gets one. She probably would be scared off from the idea, but even if she still bought one, wouldn't it be win-win. She gets what she wants and I no longer need to know why her outlook won't work
