Hay all, just got a 1tb wd green hd and its playing up. I wandered if anyone had any ideas or similar experiences. He's whats happened. Plugged in as second hd, created simple volume and quick formated ntfs. After that it showed up full in both windows and bios. and seems to work fine. I can even send files to and from fine, but heres the weird thing. If i send a file around 700mb or higher across to starts to transfer then after about 30 secs it freezes and dosent get any furthur, then if i try anc cancel it freezes up and stops responding? But smaller files work fine..? I've tried the drive in 2 computers with two diff leads and all have the same result. Can anyone suggest anything i can do? or do you think its a dud? btw im on vista 64 with a 500gb boot drive. Any help would be great
Have you got the latest sata drivers for your motherboard? It's been reasonably common to have problems with 1TB disks and certain mobos using old drivers, I had some issues with a Gigabyte mobo and Samsung 1TB drive.
I have a WD Green 1TB and a Seagate 500GB boot drive, as you do. Mine works fine, though I think the cache in the WD drive may be a bottleneck (it's significantly smaller than the cache in my boot drive) when transferring files between the two. It could be worth updating the SATA drivers, as Fibre+ said, but I wouldn't have thought there'd be an upgrade available? I was under the impression built in SATA II drivers could take any drive with SATA II interface. However, you never know, it could solve the problem. What's your motherboard? A quick Google should show up some results (e.g., other people having the same problems, and/or links to newer SATA drivers). Edit: Although, if the drive performs the same in two different computers (I assume the hardware is fairly different in each, yes?) then it could be bad firmware/bad batch of drives (unlucky). You could always warranty the drive, if it's a 1TB drive I assume its <18months old, so should definitely still have it's warranty, whoever/wherever you bought it from.
Hurm, i tried updating the chipset drivers, and the new drive dropped out dissapeared for while, got it back showing this morn and ran a quick test with wd diag and it failed pretty much straight away.. My motherboards abit ip35-e, and the drives brand new. I cid try updating the software on the drive? Maybe i should just send it back to wd?
if WD diagnostic fails, then chances are that the drive is bad. where did you buy the drive?? i have 74GB Raptor, 1TB Black and a 1TB Green, all working on Abit iP35 Pro. the green is WD10EACS. and it has no problem writing any file, even 8GB files.
thanks, ye i've come to the same conclusion. I just got it off buzzons here on the forum, it was new tho and still sealed and one of about 40 he sold so think i got the bad egg, anyhow its got full warrenty and i've just filled in the rma with wd, and ticked the option were they send u the replacement straight away as logn as they recived bad drive within 30 days, so shouldnt be too long . Just need to get myself some of those raptors now lol. that or burn all my money on solid state
