Looking at putting a new Haswell build together in preparation for Rome Total War 2 coming out and maybe some BF4. Keen to get your thoughts on what I have put together so far on scan before committing £!

Budget: £1200-1300 for the base unit (no mouse/keyboard/monitor/OS required).

Main uses of intended build: Video editing, photography processing, some gaming (total war, BF4 etc)

Parts required: Full base unit inc all parts.

Previous build information (list details of parts): Currently have an old AMD 2 dual core build and a 2012 mac book pro.

Monitor resolution: 1080p currently but may upgrade later.

Storage requirements: SSD 256GB, currently have one in the mac and it is ideal. Have a 2GB samsung spinpoint kicking about so can also use that

Will you be overclocking: maybe :)

Any motherboard requirements (no. of USB, Xfire/SLI, fan headers): Nothing specific

Extra information about desired system: Unsure of what graphics card to go for, everything else seems fairly generic.

Link to draft build from Scan below. Thoughts / suggestions welcome!

Or I could stretch to the new gtx770 if its more future proofed. Any thoughts on the overall build?

You could easily knock £200 of the price by economizing on the case, power supply, cooler and motherboard. I've never liked spending so much on stuff which is only relevant every three or four years for building neatness or obtaining an extra 5% overclock.

I agree but the case I've wanted for about 3 years so don't mind paying the extra. Motherboard I want a full ATX and was looking at the saber but it looks overkill, do you have any other suggestions? Happy to tone down the motherboard if I can get the same features for less and then maybe step up to the I7 equivalent. Cooler I picked without looking into it much, suggestions on this? Powersupply looks good but perhaps can shave £30-40 off it to put towards a GTX770. Ideas on this also appreciated. Cheers

I don't keep up with component enough to give a proper recommendations. You'll have to look through some reviews.

Just taking the example of the power supply you could quite happily use a 500W corsair builder unit. You'd lose the neatness of a moduler if thats important. You couldn't SLI. After about ten years the 80% efficiency would mean you'd break even on your power bill and it might be a fraction noisier but its a full £100 less. Thats the extreme end of the budget cutting spectrum but I'm sure you could find a happy middle ground.

You'd probably be best allocating any spare money towards a monitor depending on what you've currently got.
