Touch looks pretty cool, might pick one up since I have no interest in the iPhone when it hits Europe.

You need to learn the wonders of the smart playlist :) I don't have space issues on my 8GB iPhone.

But grr, $200 early adopter tax! I bought the thing in NH so I wouldn't have to pay tax, then proceed to get owned. Or Steved, technically.

    touch is a rip off
the 16gb creative zen is £190....

the 80gb "classic" actually seems like quite good value.

Okay let's start from the bottom-

iPod Shuffle-Same old clippy-DAP. Cute, but the Zen Stone+ is the same price, twice the storage and with a radio, mic and stopwatch.
iPod Nano 3rd gen-Why do Apple insist that it's compulsary to make every iPod smaller to make it better? The 2nd gen Nano is a nice enough shape, but the new ones look like they're meeting a Zen V half way. I expect they'll look nicer in real life but I don't see them winning awards for ergonomics. New UI looks nice though, although I've never found coverflow to be more than a gimmick.
iPod Classic-160gb is insane. More storage than most laptops, and at last all metal design. Probably the best update of the lot and again, nicer UI.
iPod Touch-Okay, so this is where I get confused. You've got a product that's 10x less capacious than the Classic, but with superior features and a completely different design to your other iPods. The fact that it's got Wifi means it's targetted at the serious consumer, yet doesn't have the storage to match. Personally I think they could have done a bit better on it- maybe encasing the hardware in a Classic-style body?

The Wireless music store was predictable, and something Microsoft have hopefuly gotten round to matching with the next Zune. However claiming to have done the wifi thing 'properly' when they've taken a completely different direction on it doesn't really add up- no sharing or swapping is definately a bummer. The biggest issue with the new line though is the lack of new features. Other than on the touch, there's yet again nothing different about them. Still no radio, no line-in ability, no mass-storage-compliance. Still, people'll buy the things to death and Apple certainly haven't put a foot out of place (except perhaps with the Nano design), but personally I don't find it all that exciting. The new Zen trounces the Nano, and whilst I expect the Classic will hold the podium for a while, I expect we'll see much larger capacities pop up on other players soon.

I too love the idea of an iTouch - but the pricing of the touch pods has me more excited about the possible pricing of the iPhone over here. The 16Gb iTouch is the same price as the 8Gb iPhone in the states - $399. According to the info Hippy has provided, $399 = £269 at the Apple store. So by logical deduction, the UK iPhone should cost £269! :D

    Yeah, that's doable. I don't even mind switching to O2. ;)

Still, thinking about it I think they're missing a market. The iPod Touch could so easily be tweaked to be a PDA. I wonder if the calendar syncs with iCal.

I do use the playlist functions but as i use the London underground alot i need shedloads of music to kill the traveling time, also whilst at work i provide the entertainment for everyone as i have TV shows and Anime for the staff to watch during everyones lunch breaks. I just may and upgrade to the 80gig classic as it seems pretty reasonable for price, what i would like to know is the accessories like the video out cable compatible with the new classic? im hoping so.

In the computer industry, things never do make sense...

Kind of screws the pooch. I can't help but thinking of the effortless syncing on the Palm PDAs, or even the reasonably good sync achieved with Windows Mobile devices. Since Apple is all proprietary, how hard would it be to make an iPod Touch or iPhone function like a decent PDA and, using iSync, synchronise across the board with Apple Mail, Address Book, iCal and Safari (bookmarks)?

They couldn't though. As much as Apple likes to think it's products are the best around, it also acknowledges that most people use PCs with Outlook, IE, Firefox and tons of other alternatives. If they were to make the iPhone sync well, it would have to be at least with Office as well, otherwise it would be redundant to everyone but the ardent mac user. The iPhone is the best implamentation of a user-friendly PDA interface so far though, just lacking the features to make it a viable replacment. Rumours are spreading that Microsoft's working on a more consumer-friendly iteration of Windows Mobile though, which might make things a bit more exciting.

If the iPod Touch is running the same software as the iPhone it will certainly be hacked and we should see some cool 3rd party apps for it.

All you early iPhone adopters - you're all probably feeling a bit steamed (and quite possibly reamed ;)) over the price cut. Well Uncle Steve has gone back on his previous stand of 'tough', and is now offering all iPhone owners who paid top wack for their phones a $100 credit for use at the Apple Store:

Better than a kick in the teeth, eh?

Might be worth spending it on iTunes credit to pay for Apple to make ringtones out of the tunes you've already paid for ;).

Didn't apple attempt to make PDA's in the past though? And failed pretty much?

    EDIT: Called the Newton...

I'm fairly tempted by a 160GB Ipod. My old 18.5GB G3 is nice, but having to put only my favourite rated tunes on it sucks. 160GB is still too small but at least it's getting there.

Look like over priced fashion accesories to me nothing more and cant say people with iPods I know have had a good experience in terms of 3 of em breaking with in a month of the warranty running out. And with latest price cuts on the iPhone I can only see these selling to a very niche market.

Obviously some people have good experiences with em but cant say there for me.

As much as I normally dislike anything that is popular, and as ugly as Apple has made their nano look on their website and on the TV ads, I went to the store and checked them out anyway.

They were priced at $250, so I went to a different store and bought my wife a nano classic for $200, saving $50.
The nano classic was broken (bad play button... which I hear is important) so I looked on apple's website out of curiosity and saw that the new nano was $200 as well!

Long story short, I returned the broken nano classic, bought a new nano, and slapped the Apple rep for taking too long to replace the price tags on the table.

The fact that the new nano is cheaper than the old one, includes video, coverflow, and other shiny stuff, makes it easy to ignore the beveled surface.

In fact, the surface actually looks cool in person, primarily because it isn't plastic, which also makes it feel more durable. (I'm sure the screen is still plastic or cheap glass, so I won't be trying the iPhone key-test anytime soon.)

Overall, I say well done Apple. I am still perfectly content with my iPod Video 80GB because it does everything I need and more, but man the new interface is slick, and faster than I thought! If the iPod touch can download podcasts via WiFi then I might have to start saving up!

I don't care about the price or whatever else is available by other manufacturers - i'm buying a touch. An iPhone without the stupid phone bit is just what I was hoping they'd release :)
