Hi all, After an underwhelming experience with a dell studio 15 i'm sending it back and on the look for a new laptop. I'm going to mostly use it for general use, but also for the occasional video editing and 3d animation. so i need a decent cpu ( im thinking another i7 720qm) Any recommendations?
CAD/media work, these guys http://www.workstationspecialist.com/ Forget the new i7 mobile CPU range, there not all that great compared to the last generation. Better stick to a dual core as well as most applications in this line of work are still suited best to fast dual cores vs slow Quads.
After having it about 2 days, i started getting horizontal lines appearing all over the screen on boot up. Seemed ok after that, but didnt want to take the chance. Asked dell for a replacement but they said they could only send someone out to repair it. And as it was only a few days old i thought i'd cut my losses and go else where. Havent really looked into pthers so much yet, but thanks for the heads up i'll check them out. Not sure about the mac option, not been a massive fan of them and would prob be abit more cash too, but i'll have a look around. thanks
Hurm, i'm not to keen on the whoel mac side of things. And i'd really like to get one of these i7 mobile cpu's. I do a fair bit of encoding, so the power woudl come in handy. Plus i'm not likely to get a new one for a good few years, so ideally would like to get the latest tech. The prob im having is that i carnt seem to find that many companies using the i7 720 etc yet... hurmmmm.
Ive been looking at getting a lenovo ideapad Y650 from the states, they look good on paper gpu maybe a little underpowered but i dont game or anything on a laptop anyways. Ive never had or even used a lenovo laptop but apparently the build quality is very good and i love the design of the Y650.
I have a similar question. Currently, I have an Asus Core2Duo 2.0GHz, 2gb RAM, dedicated 7700go, it's almost 3 years old and still performs pretty well. The thing is that the screen hinge broke (even though I can still open and close it, but it makes nasty cracking sounds). Should I wait till the beginning of next year to get an i7? Is the performance worth the wait?
+1. Repair > Replacement in a lot of cases. If you can find a decent tutorial for this, I'd advise repair.
i would recomend rizeon but they are doing something t there website but go to laptops direct they have every laptop you can think of pretty much http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/
Yeah, I checked the price for a new LCD screen. It would be around $110. Also, the replacement screen doesn't include the "plastic" lid and attachment that goes to the hinge. It's just a thin LCD panel. My LCD panel is perfect, no problem at all, just the plastic that's cracked. I thought about taking it to a repair man/shop, I don't think it's a good idea. They are really unreliable and overcharge here in my country. I'll just suck it up and be uber careful when I use it.
sounds like its just the hinge/plastics the hinges you can most likely get off ebay pretty cheap, possibly plastics too if that bothers you, im sure you'd rather be able to open and close it properly rather than it looking all pretty!
Yeah, the screen isn't what you need. You need the bezel, lid and hinges; probably be able to get them either new or off a trashed one being broken for parts on eBay. If you can live with it, do so until you can't anymore - laptop repair is bloody difficult, usually - but if you can find a good tutorial, go ahead.
Ironically the Dell Studio 15 and 17 can be had with 1920x1080 (80 quid option I think) and a Core i7 720.
not that i could find in the UK, closest option is there new studio 17 with a 1600x900 screen and the I7-820 chip horrid resolution. You cant beat the 16:10 or 4:3 format for working on a machine, films and games are fine on 16:9, but its too letter boxed for anything other than that.
Ye, does seem dell has the market when it comes to the i7 at present. Now im grudgingly looking at the studio XPS 16. Does anyone know if there's any other difference between the studio 15 an 16 xps besides the graphics card? Seems alot of extra cash if all the rest of the components are exactly the same as the studio 15. Plus i've not heard amazing things about the studio xps 16 graphics card, which i guess is supposed to be a gaming machine..
