Hi, I boughyt components for a PC that I buhilt nmyself and of course encountered some nasty teething problems, read on if you dare ;p

here is the Spec : -

Epox EP-8KHA+/AMD Athlon XP 1900+/Zalman Flower - Bundle
    GlobalWin 802 (Macron 300W PSU)
    Crucial 256MB DDR PC2100 x 2
    Maxtor DiamondMax 40GB (HD-001-MD)
    Maxtor DiamondMax 60GB (HD-001-MD)
    Pioneer DVD-106S Region Free!
    Teac 3.5" Floppy Disk
    Creative Labs Inspire 5.1 5300
Gainward GeForce2 Ti/450 TV Golden Sample 64MB DDR
    YS-TECH FD8125 80mm Fan - 4 Pin x 2

Right, basically, the problem is, I boot it up, everything seems to register fine, slap the win2k floppy boot disk in for installation, blalbalbalblab, then it asks me to restart after installing the files to complete the installation, so I reboot, only to find that it gets stuck at a certain point of the starup bit, "Building DMI Pool", and just stays there, I have left it to run to see if it would get passed it over time, but that fails.

This is basically a plea ofr help, as I have a really great PC lying there absoloutly useless :) So any hardwar boffs/enthusiasts please try and help me by givin me a "quickfix" (is there such thing?! :p)

    Thanks for your time :)

When you say your cooler is the "Zalman Flower" - do you mean the cooler that is like a fan shape, with a fan that bolts on above it? CNPS3000 or something like that. Coz if it is, its not rated high enuff to cool your cpu.

They are only supposed to go up to 1.4ghz, whereas your cpu is 1.6ghz, and if it was slowly overheating that might explain the locking up...

Or I could be wrong :p

Yea, its the fanned out thing, with a suspeneded Fan above it, and yes it is suited to the cpu chip :)

But thats not the issue atm I hope, I bought it in a bundle anyways, so I doubt the people that I bought it from would supply it with insufficiant cooling for the spec, that wouldnt make sense :)

Just to clarify, the Zalman is rated up to 1.4Ghz for TBirds, and up to the XP1900 (1.6Ghz) for the Palomino core chips. This is because the Palomino (XP) chips run cooler due to a lower core voltage than the old Tbird.

    :)

Ohh yeah... - I knew there was a reason I was still a minimodder :p lol

Dont you think running a 1.6ghz cooler on a 1.6ghz chip is a lil close to the edge tho? Particularly the Zalmans as they tend to sacrifice cooling performance for quietness.

Tomshardware did a round up where the compared a load of socket A coolers - heres the list which shows the temps they run at: http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/01q2/010521/cooler-29.html

Not that I`m paranoid about overheating or anything ;)

If it was overheating, it is doubtful it would overheat in exactly the same place every time. Building the DMI pool data does something todo with hardware, but I can't remember what...do a search on google or something and find out what the DMI pool actually does, maybe that will help pinpoint your problem. Maybe try installing from CD rather than booting from floppy?

well if Win2k has installed all the files, and then you boot and it only gets as far as the last part before the OS wants to kick in, it might be win2k not booting.

have you tried another win2k cd to install from as you may have a duff CD or something.
