Glad to see our tax money going towards inportant things Does anyone really care what a penny looks like? New Penny
Nuh uh! We still have our credit cards to max out before we run from debt collectors! And besides, everyone here has a reserve of at least 2 nickels.
What do you mean "soon"? Been there, done that. Had a T-shirt but it got re-po'd BTW C-Sniper, love the sig
Smart ones will melt 'em down and sell them to metallurgists or whoever does the work with zinc and copper. Totally illegal, but it still serves them right for losing money on every cent produced. It's not like it's a game console where they'll make it back some other way... (except how they just rob us blind with about thirty different taxes, but that would happen anyways).
funniest part is the following from the linked article... not even going to comment on the fact that they will revamp it now and then in 2010 again.
Heh, you served the american economy! Pretty new design though - the new sterling coins are great, you can make the british seal out of them!
I thought you guys had done the same as us and started making "bronze" coins from copper-plated steel, seems it didn't last. We had the same situation with our bigger bronze coins being worth more in scrap, changed to steel back in 1992 but the whole coin is plated so no rusty edges.
I just wish our coins were as cool as the Canadian Dubloonies. Now that is a coin worth having in your pocket.
lol, same here. I've even seen costlier ones. Seriously, without pennies, what would we throw into donation/wishing fountains?
The reason for that being that there are so many false pound coins in circulation --about £30 million worth, or about two out of every 100 of the 1.47 billion pound coins in circulation. One way to keep ahead of the forgers is to keep changing the design.
of course by changing the design every year, the general public has no clue as to what pound coins are real and what are fakes. which allows the forgers to continue stamping coins.
at least the US mint is only changing one coin, here in the UK the mint redesigned and is now circulating new 1p, 2p, 5p, 20p 50p and £1 coins, all with new designs, aparently when you arange them all together it makes the design of some flag or emblem or something....
The coins are used to commemorate anniversaries and they're a nice little invisible earner from collectors around the globe. And with the £1 coin, politics comes into it; The new jigsaw design will hopefully satisfy such nationalism. A large fraction of forgeries are "laundered" through slot machines and don't have to look brilliant, just be the right size and weight.
