I'm trying to advertise a new product, it's called Picstick, and i'm not going to post a direct link for obvious reasons..

It's an education product, basically child monitoring software with advanced features, that's on a USB stick.

I was wondering, does anyone have any suggestions for the best way to get this out onto the web, in forums, without causing havok? Is there a place to advertise new products?

Even though it may be computer based, don't just limit yourself to the internet. The biggest response i have recieved from a work website was from advertising in a national paper. Well worth the outlay.
Also send your product free to people who would review/reccomend your product.

You could select some schools that get to use it for free (lots of kids on their puters!) if they advertise it to the parents.

Also, since your buyers are parents that are 'afraid' of internet (crudely put, but you get the point), i don't think internet advertisement is going to be very effective. Try connecting the product to a time when the parents are away (AFK, lol). I'm thinking local pubs, sportsclubs, stuff like that. Maybe a rich sports federation or parents magazine would be willing to buy a whole lot to hand out to new subscribers? Giving them a ring will in no case hurt the product :)
Another place to advertise would be universities. Students have a surprising amount of kids, and even more brothers and sisters, and almost all of them are connected to young families in some way or other. Great place to start word-of-mouth advertising i reckon :thumb:

After all that rambling, might i suggest that i don't really like the name? "Picstick" has 2 assotiations for me:
    1) an icepick. Not very relevant, but hardly a wanted object around young kids :D
    2) a picture utility. I was thrown way off-track by the name at first. People tend not to like products that confuse them.

I hope that was all useful. Good luck!

Hang around out side schools and give it away free then when there hooked ramp up your prices... erm sorry wrong business.

Seriously though, give them away of perhaps try and convince the school to buy them at cost. Word of mouth is worth a fair bit these days. Either that or a paper mag like PC-Pro they often have similar product and have a fairly broad readership or on that note Computer Active aims at a lower level user newbies and older types if you could get them to review the product you might hit a winner. But it would probably be worth getting it in a bricks and mortar shop given its aimed at people who may not necessarily be comfortable with the web.

Try http://www.edugeek.net. It's full of school IT workers (mainly from the UK) who might be able to help you. (contact the admin first though).

The only problem with this stick is that if it was preventing me from doing something, i would rip it out and destroy it.

That wont cause riots at all. As much as i want this guy to succeed, monitoring children's internet is the wrong way to do it. Mabye its because my schools blocker blocks all search engines, and all i get to go to is thinkgeek and look at fortunes.

By the time kids want to look at porn, they will have figured out how to circumvent any barrier you put in their way. There is no force on earth more powerful than an adolescent's sex drive!
